12 ARRESTED IN US PLANE TURN BACK: DUTCH AGENCY
Yahoooo News via Reuters ^ | 8/23/06

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police arrested 12 passengers on a U.S. Northwest Airlines plane bound for India which was forced to turn back to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, news agency ANP reported.

ANP quoted a police spokesman as saying 12 were arrested, but declined to give further details due to the ongoing investigation.

Police officials were not immediately available to comment.

The Dutch Defense Ministry said earlier the pilot decided to turn back after the crew said several of the 149 passengers on flight 42 to Mumbai were behaving suspiciously.

Security has been increased at airports worldwide in the last two weeks after British police said they had foiled a plot by British Muslims to blow up planes in the mid-Atlantic using liquid explosives disguised as drinks.

I'll bet it's five atheists, three Unitarian Universalists, a lesbian Wiccan couple, a Native American shaman, and a Jehovah's Witness.

(The incident was probably sparked by the Jehovah's Witness pushing his pamphlets on the other passengers.)

Is it possible to link cell phone batteries somehow and make a taser?

Is it possible to have a thread like this with facts instead of all the wisecracks? I don't find any of the wisecracks a bit funny and I would bet neither do a lot of other Freepers.

When you click on a thread to find facts, and have to go through post after post of wisecracks, it is annoying. Freepers used to know when to joke around and when to cut out the nonsense. Somehow that has been lost in recent times!

Doing some checking .... if the bad guys figured a way to extract the lithium metal from Li-Ion batteries then they COULD blow up planes. Lithium reacts very violently with water.

Personally, I would think they were handing him their cell phones because something was about to happen that may have made them want to call out - that is, even though cellphones don't work (to my knowledge) at that altitude, they may have thought that the calls made by passengers on the 9/11 flights were made on cellphones. I believe the calls were made on those handsets that are on the backs of the seats and not on cellphones, although I could be wrong.

But I would suspect that thesé "passengers" were told to hand in their cellphones because their leader thought, rightly or wrongly, that some of them might get cold feet and call someone somewhere.

No. Truth be told, I think many of us are stressed over the terrorist issues, moreso with the authorities who do not seem to care if we all die.

The escape valves are the FR threads because we are of like minds and passions. The stress has to go somewhere and the "somewhere" is humor.

Interesting that the ground controller who is talking mostly to the F-16 is a woman, but not really surprising, since many of our USAF and Navy controllers are also women. She's using what seems to me like normal military protocol. At least it sounds like the US intercept/weapons control protocol I've heard. BRA means "Bearing Range Altitude". She also refers to the Northwest aircraft as the "target", which can't have been too encouraging to its flight crew, assuming they could hear those exchanges. :)

When you log on trying to find facts, it is annoying to see the same quotes over and over again on all these threads day after day. Maybe we need one daily thread for people that cannot handle stress and make these breaking news threads shorter for those of us who just want the facts! Then both groups could be happy! :)

Yes, but I'm sick of the stupid "Amish" and "Lutheran" jokes. Sometimes I don't even read these threads because I have to wade through so many pictures of buggies.

Could we maybe come up with some fresh jokes?

I think South Asian means the old India, which includes India, Pakistan and Bangladesh? Any Brit Freepers out there that can confirm this?

An Amish, a Lutheran, and a Methodist walked into a bar...

I read somewhere just recently that a UPS plane carrying a large shipment of lithium batteries caught fire on the ground. UPS has stated they will not ship these items any more. Like the ones Dell has in their recalled notebook computers.

If they can catch fire for no reason who's to stop terrorists from using them somehow to set the plane on fire or figure out how to use them in an explosion of some sort.

I totally agree. Those jokes ARE getting rather moldy.

Me 2 .. only the purr of the engines put me out before takeoff. Most embarrassing flight was my usual zonk out before takeoff for a 2-1/2 hr. flight, but then I slept thru the landing, too.

There I was, with pillow marks embedded in the side of my cheek, and I wake up to, "Ma'am .. ma'am .. we've landed." I look to see a completely empty plane, save for me and the crew. LOL. Sheepishly, I gather my stuff and we all laugh. Am I a deep sleeper or what?

We're so witty here on FR that I was hoping for something better than the tired old Amish. I realize none of this is any laughing matter, but a little wit sure makes it more bearable.
