Straight woman seeks equality under gay-rights law:
Unwed Redmond worker wants her male partner to receive health benefits
One of the first tests for Washington's new gay civil rights law has an intriguing twist: The complaint was filed by a heterosexual woman.
The state's discrimination watchdogs are investigating the case, which claims unmarried straight people should get the same domestic partner benefits as their gay and lesbian co-workers.
But officials are treading carefully, Human Rights Commission Director Marc Brenman said, because upholding the claim could set a sweeping new precedent for Washington businesses.
...
The complaint, filed last week, is one of four that have spawned full-fledged investigations under the sexual orientation section of Washington's anti-discrimination law.
It was signed by Sandi Scott-Moore, a Redmond-based employee of manufacturer Honeywell International. Scott-Moore claims health insurance coverage for her male partner was denied because the unmarried couple is not of the same gender.
...
Honeywell spokesman Robert Ferris said the company does provide health benefits for the partners of its gay and lesbian employees and has a zero-tolerance stand on discrimination. But the company disagrees with Scott-Moore, he said in a statement.

It's easier to end a relationship. That appeals to alot of people who can't be bothered with all the baggage that marriage entails.
Trust me, long-term, live-in relationships can be just as messy as marriages. Perhaps even moreso.
Forcing heterosexual couples to marry for benefits is unfair even though homo marriage is still illegal in most states.
Equal protection under the law has to be applied here in the terms of equal fiscal protection.
I love it when liberalism starts to implode with unintended consequences
The last two words in your post are what got you in that mess to begin with! Good luck to you....it can't get any worse, right? :)
"HR wonkette: 'I don't think I want to answer any more of your questions...'"
LOL! Go get 'em! I love it. I'm so glad to see this case.
My sister is a lesbian Femi-Gnatzie and we have had many arguments about this. She has every right to work benefits that I do as a married heterosexual, and she can d@mn well PAY for them HERSELF as we do as a self-employed couple. She wants health insurance? Buy it. She wants dental? Buy it. She wants her "partner" to have POA? Get a lawyer. She wants death benefits for herself and her partner? Buy insurance. It's NOT Rocket Science.
I actually gave her a copy of The Constitution and The Bill of Rights, asking her to show me exactly where my rights as a citizen end and her special interest rights begin.
She hates it when I do things like that to her, LOL!
LOL Gotta love this lawsuit!
Under current Washington state standards, they shouldn't need to get married to get the bennies. Some siblings living together should also sue to get this "civil right", less the state wants to stick its nose into people's bedrooms & deny the "right" based on the siblings lack of a sexual relationship with each other. Or what about a middle aged "child" living with their parent?
Domestic partnership legislation is bad law.
Good points Wuli. I wonder how they can rule two unrelated of the same sex are entitled to benefits or a ruling of discrimination etc. when an aunt and neice might live together and be denied the same "protection." It is all about sex and deviant behavior being endorsed through judicial fiat or in some cases executive directives or even legislation.
I would like to count my cat as a tax exemption
First you should probably try to get it a credit card.
"The state's discrimination watchdogs are investigating the case, which claims unmarried straight people should get the same domestic partner benefits as their gay and lesbian co-workers."
"All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."

"I would like to count my cat as a tax exemption."
Yeah! Stop discrimination against pets! They should be able to marry same-sex, too! We're here, we sniff our rears, get used to it! (just kidding, but then you never know what some of these loons will want next!)
I hope she wins............."
Why? Is there a way she could (legally) loose?
Show her the Office depot catalogue. It has all the legal forms she needs. POA is about $5.00. Nothing if you download offline.
It is not really their (liberal judges) attraction, approval or appreciation for "same sex behavior"; it is purely political and an example of their desire to meet what they believe is their own warped standard of political correctness.
They are actually totally honest when they speak in approval of totally contradictory positions. As one popular radio talk show host likes to say: "Liberalism is a mental illness" (or words to that affect).
"I foresee a new reality show: 'Major Holidays With Diana's Family'...LOL"
ROFLMAO!
Haha I love it. We never thought this would get so big, I just wanted medical.
