Liberal under fire from own party over Hezbollah remarks

MP denies urging group be taken off terrorist list

OTTAWA - An Ontario Liberal MP came under political fire yesterday, including from his own party, for comments indicating Canada should remove Hezbollah from the country's list of terrorist organizations -- remarks he denies making.

Borys Wrzesnewskyj, the Liberals' associate Foreign Affairs critic, was quoted in reports from Lebanon saying he favoured lifting the terrorist label from Hezbollah, which has been on Canada's terror list since 2002.

But Mr. Wrzesnewskyj, who was in Lebanon with two other MPs on a fact-finding mission over the weekend organized by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations, released a statement yesterday saying he made no such comments.

"On the contrary, Hezbollah is a terrorist organization, and I stated that it must remain on Canada's list because it has committed war crimes by sending rockets into civilian areas," the statement said.

What he did say, the statement added, was that Canada needs to evaluate anti-terror legislation so it can negotiate with groups on the list in order to implement a peace process.

CanWest News Service stands by the original story that quotes Mr. Wrzesnewskyj as saying that he agreed that Hezbollah should be removed from the terror list.

Mr. Wrzesnewskyj could not be reached for comment yesterday as he prepared to board a flight out of the Syrian capital of Damascus en route to a Liberal caucus retreat in Vancouver.

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said he was glad to see Mr. Wrzesnewskyj denied the initial reports, but Mr. Day criticized talk of altering legislation.

"You don't accommodate people who are carrying out a plan of genocide," Mr. Day said from his B.C. riding.

Canada has indeed communicated with Hezbollah despite its terror listing, Mr. Day said, referring to a G8 communique that called for the group to disarm and disavow its intent to destroy Israel.

Mr. Wrzesnewskyj's comments also attracted the attention of his own party.

In a statement, interim Liberal leader Bill Graham said his party views Hezbollah as a terrorist organization and it "should be treated as such under all applicable Canadian laws."

"Hezbollah is committed to the overthrow of the state of Israel and has demonstrated in both words and actions that it is committed to a policy of violent anti-Semitism. The government of Canada must condemn such groups as strongly as possible ... That is why it was the Liberal Party of Canada that originally listed Hezbollah as a terrorist organization under Canadian law and why we still strongly support keeping Hezbollah on that list. Any suggestion to the contrary does not reflect the official position of our party."

Dr. Keith Martin, the Liberals' acting Foreign Affairs critic, also said the comments didn't reflect the Liberal position and he would be talking with Mr. Wrzesnewskyj "as soon as he gets off the plane."

As for possibly remaking terror legislation to negotiate with Hezbollah, Mr. Martin said the group has to "renounce their position that they want to obliterate Israel and kill Jews" before negotiations can start, something with which Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe later agreed in a statement.

The Canada-Israel Committee National called on Mr. Graham to censure Mr. Wrzesnewskyj and relieve him of his position as deputy Foreign Affairs critic.

New Democrat MP Peggy Nash, who was in Lebanon with Mr. Wrzesnewskyj and Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Mourani, said Hezbollah is responsible for starting the latest conflict with Israel that led to "incredible, incredible devastation" in Lebanon. The terrorist label on Hezbollah could hinder any progress the Lebanese government might make toward peace, she said. But she said she has not called for Hezbollah to be removed from the terror list.

NDP leader Jack Layton said he didn't understand why Mr. Wrzesnewskyj raised the issue of a list at all.

"I doubt that at this point the question of lists is very important to the combatants," he said from Quebec City.

The Tories are taking the position that, as Borys Wrzesnewskyj is the Grits' associate Foreign Affairs critic, he is deemed to have been speaking for the party.

That means that the Tories possition is that the Grits cannot distance themselves from his utterances unless they fire him from the shadow cabinet.

The Liberals in Canada have superior knowledge and morality, just like they do in the USA.

They see the masses of the electorate as quaint, ignorant yehoos, who do not know any better in their ignorance. So the Liberals have a "secret," caucus agenda, and a publicly presented "acceptable" agenda.

When Wrzesnewskyj, Canada's leftist Polish Pitot Tube, arrives in the Liberal caucus retreat, he will be greated as a returning hero, who let a proper test fart in public, oh my, those ignorant bastids didn't like the smell of our superior wisdom, did they, and they will laugh at the ignoramus Canadian patriots who responded with such vitriol.

In public Wrzesnewskyj will be castigated, in the caucus, he will be feted.

Lesson learned: Do not trust the lying liberals for even a second. All they want is a return to power, and they will say anything, promise anything, or do anything to get it back, like the little totalitarians they truly are. And they deserve to be back in power, because they are superior to the common patriot clowns of traditionalist Canada!

According to Liberals, everybody knows of that superiority deep down, and if Harper continues to win, win , win, he cheats to do it, like going to Afghanistan to boost the troops, and keeping the leftest press away from soldiers funerals, and not critisizing President Bush who is really so stupid! All cheating, and prostituting himself! DUH?

Lets hope that Canada's out of touch, moonbat, ideologically challenged Liberal POSs keep up the good work, lets have a few more trial balloons like the Polish Pitot Tube's and we will joyfully use shoe horns to stuff them right back up your arses where the came from!

I can hardly wait to see a Liberal sponsored Bill to take Hezbollah off of the terrorist list, so that Petro Canada can get a little cheap oil from the Arab Friends of Canada Club, and CIDA can loan money to the Hezzies?

Result? Majority Government for Harper , and it can't be too soon!

You know, I have to wonder if these Nimrods have even the slightest conception that Hezbollah and the rest of the Islamonazis could give a s**t less what Canada's laws are one way or another.

This is like debating the number of angles who can fit on the head of a pin while the devil is chewing on your leg.

Madness! They really don't get it.

Please,,,,, don't post dumb statements by wacko Canadian Liberals - it brings out all the American nut-jobs who can't differentiate between the statements of a few Canadian wack-jobs and attitudes of the general Canadian population.

TIA
