Best and worst commercials of the year
MSNBC ^ | Aug 22, 2006 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Posted on 08/22/2006 6:50:44 PM PDT by indcons

Only one commercial can top the sheer hatred our readers have for the winner of this year's worst-commercial contest. Yes, only creepy, toenail-snapping Digger the Dermatophyte is more hated than the horrendous repetition that is this year's winning loser, the HeadOn headache remedy commercial.

In case you haven't seen it (you can find it on YouTube, but really, why would you want to?), the commercial is as insanely simple as it is annoying. A female voice repeats "HeadOn: Apply directly to the forehead!" three times as a blissed-out smug woman rolls what appears to be a Bonne Bell LipSmacker on her head.

What in the name of a glue stick in disguise is going on there? First off, does anyone believe that this works any better than, say, rubbing your head with your hand? Who decided that a commercial where only the product name and tagline are repeated over and over was good advertising? What kind of drugs is the model in the ad actually on? And does anyone know anyone who has ever, ever used this product, or seen it for sale anywhere outside these ads?

The wonderful violins on the Dow Chemical Human Element commercials always draws me in. It is so calming compared to the overloud, in-your-face music that accompanies most commercials.

I HATE THE GEICO COMMERCIALS! THEIR COMMERCIALS ARE SO IRRITATING THAT GEICO AND THEIR ADVERTISING AGENCY DESERVE TO GO BANKRUPT! /rant

No way, the new Geico commercials are hilarious ("Cranberry! Mashed potatoes! And grah-HAY-vy! Wooooo-hoooooh!") while the gecko schtick is starting to run out of ideas.

"I don't want to be hit, in the REEEEE-ear again!"

The Capital One commercial where the guy is eating the worms out of the bait carton is a classic.

"Back when I had them, my parrot loved to torment my cat. It would ride on the dog’s back as they followed the cat around the apartment. The dog didn’t much like cats either."

LOL!

if you or a loved one ever suffered from 'Rhoid Rage, you'd think differently about it!

I'm sure that hemorrhoids aren't funny, I've never had one but they should be called assteroids.

That is bordering on child pornography. It is very sick.

Total nonsense. Lighten up, Francine.

Agreed. I think it is fair to say that the average radio commercial is far worse than the average TV one. The print ads never seem to leave the desired recall in the viewer/reader.

On a related note - local commercials are quite pathetic too. While I have sen some bad ones, the worst is for Rocky's Autos (in CO). I wish that ad would just disappear from TV.

Sirens and honking horns should not be allowed in radio ads; it's distracting when one is driving.

My favorite commercial is broadcasted for an insurance company that I have forgot. The scene starts with a couple sitting in their living room watching a sporting event on the boob tube. The sportscaster announces that some evil knieval type daredevil is ready to launch his rocket.

The daredevil launches. The husband say's something like look where did he go?

A short time later they hear a loud sound as the daredevils rocket crashes into their boat which is docked out back at the pier.

I don't remember the Insurance companies name but that was one damn funny commercial.

Yack, Quiznos was wierd. The new one for the BBQ sandwich was ok though.

Is it just my imagination, or is the song that plays in that ad "Makin' Whoopee?"

I sing that in my head every time it comes on, but I don't know if I'm imagining the music is it, though.

Do you remember the Christmas one where the pillager shoots the outdoor plastic reindeer with a bow & arrow? That one's funny, too.

I love the one with Charo!

I'm playing a Charo character at my Festival this year, and I've watched that commercial about 30 times so far.

"Airing during the next rerun of "Easy 'Roider"."

I think the idea for that commercial was from Brokeback Mountain, wasn't it?
