A Day in the Life of President Bush - (photos) - 8.22.06

After calling President Karzai of Afghanistan to discuss security measures and a potential visit, President Bush left the White House early this afternoon to go to Minnesota. In Minnetonka, he participated in a panel discussion on health care, and also signed an Executive Order to help increase the transparency of America's health care system - empowering Americans to find better value and better care. The order will require various federal agencies to compile information about the quality and price of health care they pay for, and share that information with their customers and each other. The White House website has posted a FACT SHEET about this order.

The President also attended a fundraiser for Minnesota Congressional Candidate, State Senator Michele Bachman after the panel discussion, and stopped for a frozen custard in Wayzata.

Enjoy your trip to Sanity Island on the Daily Dose!

Yogurt is fairly straightforward. It is milk (any kind - goat, cow or sheep) heated and with an acidophilos culture added to make it thicken.
Frozen Custard is basically a frozen pudding, mostly with eggs in the recipe (and milk and sugar, of course).
Ice cream comes in many variations. We have the "lite" ice creams, too. Made with stuff like low fat milk, or milk and water (almost like Italian ices), but the "real" stuff is made with just milk, cream and flavorings, and that's all I really like.
I have an ice cream maker - it could also make frozen custard, but I've never done that - I use it a lot during the summer when there are fresh berries. It's my favorite appliance.

I have an ice cream maker as well I have done blackberry ice cream and frozen strawberry yogurt but I do not think I have any frozen custard recipes.

If you have one I would like to try that.

I was reading an article on a company I'm invested in. The primary owner, a billionaire named Harold Simmons, has been especially generous donating to President Bush's campaigns. He explains why:
SIMMONS:" The policy of the federal government is one of most influential things for business success -- or lack of success. If Democrats were basically in there very long, they'd have everything so regulated and taxed and screwed up that it would kill the economy. We need lower taxes and we need less of an attitude that government's got to make all the major decisions. It's gone way too far. In fact, (President George) Bush has let it go farther than I think he should have, but he's certainly better than the Democrats. They don't understand business. If the Democrats would take some good courses in economics in college, they wouldn't be Democrats, they wouldn't be liberals"

I have one more quote from Mr. Simmons about the last election. I thought it was interesting.
SIMMONS: "Yes, because I've had more money lately. I didn't always have this much money, but I've always given pretty heavily. I was very concerned that (U.S. Sen John) Kerry -- who I think is a pathological liar and a dangerous guy -- not be elected in 2004. The Swift Boat people educated me on him, and I gave them about $3 million. I probably gave a total of $4 million to $6 million to Republicans in the last election. I think it's money well spent. I gave a lot of money to run ads to get the U.S. Supreme Court justices approved, and that was well worth it, too. I've also put a lot of money into the campaign against the death tax, which I think is a totally unfair tax. It doesn't contribute a thing to the government or to the U.S. economy, because everybody figures out a way to beat most of it, anyway. I've got numerous tax attorneys and we've figured out a way to beat it. It shouldn't even be there."

This is only intended as a little pick me up for Bushbots and other assorted Republican supporters. I thought it especially interesting what he said about the Swift Boat Vets. They did great in 2004.

Dolly,

All my collages are meant to be enjoyed. By all means, feel free to post it. Unfortunately, I cannot find a way to sign it. I did not find any way to add text using Microsoft Photo Editor even after using the "Help" menu. Just mention I created the collage. That will have to do until I get some different software.

My ice cream maker came with several Frozen Custard recipes - here's one -

2 eggs, beaten until fluffy
1 c. sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
1/8 tsp. salt
2 c. half-and-half
2 c. cream
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, flour and salt in a saucepan. Put over low heat or in a double boiler, and gradually stir in the half-and-half. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until sugar dissolves and mixture starts to thicken (about 10-15 mins) Gradually pour a small amount into the eggs (to prevent coagulation), and then add eggs to the mixture. Cook 1 min. more. Remove from heat and chill.
Then add cream and vanilla, and process in the ice cream maker.

Notes in case - half and half is half milk, half cream. Light cream or a mixture of milk and cream would probably do for you if you don't have the exact product.
