What Say Ye FR? Should a woman be allowed to teach Scripture to men?
Herald Sun ^ | 8-21-06 | n/a

Posted on 08/21/2006 5:51:49 PM PDT by Bob J

In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.

Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."

This news was posted on FR here and here.

It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.

What is your opinion?

Your tagline hits me anew, each time I see it. Let also Islam be chastened and turn to the truth.........amen.....

I gave up, on "we" a long time past. Follow your heart and do the next right thing- no matter what the lower self, would have you fear. Practical experience is the bouy marker, for my soul's clumsy embrace with honesty. Learning from my dishonest mistakes, has been, the only way for my dumb azz to barely approach truth. Other than that, I cannot answer your questions.

"So why do we consistantly leave our minds closed to the book that contains the cure for that which we all will endure which is death."

Worth repeating.Amen

I believe there's a simple answer to that.

"For the Word God....is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

"The heart is deceitfull above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9

The Bible doesn't indicate it any more than your average poem indicates it. The one thing I do agree with you on is that the Bible DOES NOT mean whatever any individual wants it to mean, no matter how sincere. How I remember this one guy in one of my bible study groups who would always say something to the effect of, "well, I don't care.... what it means to me is...." and that is pointless. Scripture has a meaning. We might all be moved by particular verses or passages at different times and the verses or passages, being inspired by God, are deep and have levels of depth so at different times in our life, they may speak to us on a deeper level than at other times, but to reiterate, there is nowhere in the Bible where one is given a hint or clue that a figure of speech is being employed, which my friend, is why there have been some problems within certain "Christian" groups who seem to believe that God, indeed, does have a hand.

I fail to see why in God's eyes a woman would be any less deserving of God's gifts.

In case it hasn't been said...The Bible is The Book, no matter who reads it to you.

It is you who have decided that there is some correlation between Apollos being with Acquilla and Pricilla and a female teaching males in a class in a church. Isn't that what you were implying?

Some of our best teachers of Scriptures are females. They are also a lot more organized and interesting than the men, most of whom are unprepared and dull.

Well, some may 'allow' it but they sure as heck don't make you feel very welcome or allow you to teach or even sing in the choir. Depends on how fundamental they are.

There are many churches that have adult sunday school. Ours does and a man is teaching it.

Pondered how to put it.

But I would prefer to say that I'm for all Islamic individuals finding Christ etc.

I don't think ISLAM itself is redeemable. I still think . . . Islam itself can go flush itself . . . at best.

I can identify with such a learning program and perspective.

Thanks.

Not really.

I'm not very big on building rigid, narrow, harshly applied doctrinal constructions on reality

from

inferences based on inferences.

I just note that the ladies were greatly in the service of The Lord in seemingly somewhat of an above average positional sort of role. That's enough for me.

I think others were the ones who brought up the Appolos thing.

I often think that the most prepared are the most dull.

What about the former spouse who kept committing adultery against you? I think God makes an exception in that case, even if He's not too happy about it.

In the last days (which I believe we're in right now), according to Joel, men AND women would be prophesying (preaching, according to some definitions). I believe God is calling women to stand beside men now, not three steps behind. I don't believe any man or woman should preach unless they are anointed by God to do so. Some 'preachers' would be better to go into some kind of administrative work instead.

Another poster said he had mentioned that there were "other issues," so it's best not to judge him until we know all the facts.
