In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.
Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."
This news was posted on FR here and here.
It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.
What is your opinion?
II Corinthians is one of my favorite books of the New Testament, although I prefer it in the KJV, rather than the NIV.
In it, Paul demonstrates the frailties of his humanity. Again, it is not part of the regular cycle of texts in most churches, and is confusing to many students of the Bible. Even the Paulist denominations generally move over II Corinthians rather swiftly. It's a bit hard to explain.
Romans is one of my favorites. Paul is so elequent and clear in his depiction of salvation. It's a shame so many people feel obligated to try so hard to be good!
John 20
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
Translation:
Jesus is directly telling a Woman to go tell the others about his resurrection. Therefore, the first evangelist was a woman.
Jesus told Mary Magdeline to go an tell everybody. If anybody should spread the word...
I hope your narrow mindedness doesn't keep you from explaining yourself when you are seeking to hear those 7 wonderful words.
If we don't praise Him, He can have the rocks cry out to Him. If there is not a man who will teach, God won't be limited in providing a means to get His message out. Shame on you for singling out people. We Pentacostals are not the only ones you are condemning when you say these harsh words.
I SAY AGAIN, THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NO RESPECTOR OF PERSONS. What God lifts up, no man can tear down.
I would rather be a forgiven sinner than a blind trying to preach to the blind their warped convictions.
Each of us has his/her own covenant with Christ Jesus. What may be right for one may not be right for another because God said he would not put more on us than we can endure. Also, we each take a different road in life with different trials and tribulations but we all hope to end up at the same finish line. I feel sorry for you that you have this awful burden to bear as part of your journey home. I will pray for you.
God is clearly Masculine in a list of ways and names.
And clearly feminine, for the literal translation of the Hebrew El Shaddai (God Almighty in my Bible) is "God, the many-breasted One."
Please don't interpret that as agreement that women should have "church"-authority over men.
Although I wouldn't have chosen your colloquialism,
= = = =
I'd forgotten that one.
But . . . uhhh . . . isn't that a colloquialism meaning
"abundant supplying One?"
I sure would like to have a copy of the lesson.
In what way do you determine what this spirit is that provides this annointment?
= = = = =
1 John 4:2
Hereby you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
John 10:4
And when he puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

Works for me.
Of course, hearing is better when done frequently and obediently.
Besides all that,
Holy Spirit is in the habit of Glorifying God.
Counterfeits aren't and certainly not that vigorously or Biblically.
Of course, folks are wise to compare all with Scripture. But I figured you knew that one.
Yeah, sure.
If God would strike . . . Annanias & Saphira down for failing to follow God's instructions
= = = = =
Uhhhhhhhhhhh, I think the record shows it was for
. . . . LYING to The Holy Spirit.
BTW, look for such phenomena to increase dramatically at some point in the not too distant future.
Scripture says no. I agree on that basis.
My mother's cousin et al are all Church of Christ folks.
Thankfully some have been freed by Holy Spirit to walk in a lot more freedom and closeness to God.
And, a lot of those who haven't been so freed are still quite precious folks. But quite frankly, quite a numbe of them are more than a little anal retentive.
I never quite figured out how out doing one another in anal retentiveness was glorifying to God.
I'd say it's the other way around, "all sufficient one" is a modern colloquialism for "many-breasted one," but they both convey the same meaning.
sh*d is translated, "female breast."
I suppose in most circles it's a little more acceptable to say "abundant, supplying one" or "all sufficient one."
Ahhhhhh . . .
Wellll we could have some fun . . . and the next time we're asked to read such a Scripture, we could substitute "many breasted One" and see how many starchy old, narrow, fussed-up, fossilized old farts and fussies fall on the floor in a dead faint.
Could be fun.
Have some smelling salts handy, however.
Not sure I'd recommend following such a Scripture up with those about "in His bossom," though. One might have to call 911.
