What Say Ye FR? Should a woman be allowed to teach Scripture to men?
Herald Sun ^ | 8-21-06 | n/a

Posted on 08/21/2006 5:51:49 PM PDT by Bob J

In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.

Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."

This news was posted on FR here and here.

It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.

What is your opinion?

"According to Scripture those who divorce and remarry are committing adultery, which not only a sin but one of the top 10."

Read Matthew 19 again. That's not what it says at all.

Mt 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Lu 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

Why become one flesh if by man it will be put asunder?

I think a search on the Bible sites in the NT with the word anointing would answer your question better.

In my experience and from my observations . . .

Holy Spirit anoints various individuals at various times AS HE WILL.

Factors contributing toward such anointing include but may not be limited to:

1. GOD'S SUPER PRIORITY in the situation and with the individuals involved.

2. HUMILITY on the part of the major actor(s)

3. BROKEN CONTRITE HEART status of the major actor(s)

4. OBEDIENCE over whatever period of time God wishes to consider of the major actor(s)

5. CONFESSED-UP/REPENTED-UP status of major actor(s)

6. FORGIVENESS toward all on the part of the major actor(s)

7. CLEAR RELATIONSHIPs status in the life/lives of the major actor(s)

8. AUTHENTIC WORSHIP flowing in HIS SPIRIT; LED OF HIS SPIRIT for whatever period of time HE ordains

= = = = = = =

Sometimes it seems like God rearranges such a list in terms of HIS utmost priority(ies) at the time.

= = = = = = =

A) Anointing may be characterized by heightened intensity of gentle and/or fierce thunderousness of the spoken and unfolded Scriptures and their pierce-ingness into the human heart of all in the room.

B) In anointed worship--it may be that HOLY SPIRIT sees fit to take over the whole 'show' and allow angelic hosts to join in discernably.

C) In anointed worship--it may be that humans all around the room--whether a small home room or a vast arena--various individuals break out singing "in The Spirit" in seemingly divergent songs and differing 'languages heavenly'/languages known and differing melodies. Yet, after a relatively few bars of music--it is obvious that HOLY SPIRIT is weaving together A SYMPHONY OF PRAISE to God that is utterly Heavenly start to finish; top to bottom; inside out--that started under Holy Spirit's control and ends precisely all together under Holy Spirit's control without any intervention or controlling, influencing actions on the part of the bypassed worship leader.

ANYONE who's experienced such likely recalls a desire to reside, flow in such an experience, such a state indefinitely. Yet, there is a sense of fittingness to Holy Spirit's timing and control, start to finish.

Often, folks will get 'goose bumps' afterwards just remembering the heavy PRESENCE OF HOLY SPIRIT during the SYMPHONY.

D) Anointing can be characterized by HOLY SPIRIT born wisdom, insight, discernment into an individual's, couple's, family's, group's, church's, region's needs, flaws, strengths, guidance and the like. There's an immediate INNER WITNESS on the part of 'tuned-in' hearers of such an anointed declaration.

E) Anointing can be characterized by HOLY SPIRIT born enabling of healing and miracles by the laying on of hands and/or speaking out what HOLY SPIRIT says to speak out.

F) Anointing can be charazterized by HOLY SPIRIT solving intractable interpersonal and/or other tangible problems miraculously in short order that had plagued individuals/groups for years, decades, generations.

G) Anointing can be charazterized as during various revivals with individuals running forward to confess sin, fall on their faces in repentance and earnestly getting their hearts and lives right with God.

. . .

= = = = =

A problem tends to develop in that leadership tends to like to take control--usually all under the rubric of "all things decently and in order" but the result of which is that Holy Spirit pulls back and allows the very human, clunky, prideful things to continue apace as man's agenda, man's way with the usual chaff results.

Typically humans try to replicate anointing by engineering doing the same things in the same way that seemed to result in an anointed service only perhaps MORE INTENSELY or more energetically--but Holy Spirit has 'moved on,' as it were.

GOD IS VERY UNinterested in formula worship and usually formula anything else. HE DESIRES, INSISTS ON moment by moment relationship--sensitivity to HIS STILL SMALL VOICE. "MY SHEEP KNOW MY VOICE," CHRIST DECLARED.

But man is not happy with leaving God in control and having to walk in such obedience and humility and persistent PRACTICE such that man CAN and DOES reliably HEAR God's still small voice within him. So, typically, God allows man to do 'man's thing' until man gets tired of trying to live on chaff or worse and seeks HIS FACE sufficiently yet again.

Besides, man usually convinces himself that man 'has this religious thing all figured out. This verse means this. That verse means that. Therefore we do this; apply this formula this way; clap; praise; read Scripture; orchestrate; orchestrate; orchestrate and out of said vending machine comes the wonderful 'God-things' we need, want, demand . . . . imagine we can manipulate God out of.

Only GOD SAYS QUIETLY . . . . 'Oh yeah? No.'

But man refuses to get the message. So, when man-things don't work, they do them more, harder, more RELIGIOUSLY. Perhaps they blame various members in the group or an out-group entity. But their mirrors remain shattered.

And God waits. Sometimes God waits centuries.

Thank you for faithfully presenting the biblical truth regarding this issue. The problem is, many today, especially on FR, have reached the point where they are no longer wiling to endure sound doctrine/teaching, but rather want their ears tickled by "heaping unto themselves teachers in accord with their own desires/lusts". Their attitude is "I think", "I feel" rather than... thus says the Lord. Today, society and personal preference instead of God's infallible Word is the standard "Christians" and non-Christians are using to determine what they believe and how they live their lives. The good news is this is exactly what God's Word says it will be like in the last days before the rapture and return/second coming of Christ.

God bless you, stay faithful and keep up the good fight of faith.

= = = =

True enough.

But are we to understand that where Scripture seems to leave plenty of room for more than one interpretation . . .

we should arbitrarily throw our lot in with ONE interpretation because ONE invdividual insists they walk so close to God compared to the rest of us mostly heathens?

or because ONE denomination is simply OBVIOUSLY GOD'S denomination as any TRUE CHRISTIAN knows automatically?

or because ONE denomination has more obsessive compulsive anal retentive 'scholars' in it?

or because ???

Who decides who will teach? The church or the government?

My granddaughter a So. Baptist is studying to become a teacher of church history. With your background I would like your views on where she will scripturally be able to teach.

Some Baptists allow divorce and remarriage, some don't. I know that some of them won't allow a divorced man to be a Pastor or a Deacon.

The the sin of adultery is OK in some instances but the sin of a women teaching boys in Sunday school is not?

Yes. She could apparently have been a Baptist in good standing, multiple husbands and all, but still couldn't teach Sunday school.

Apparently there were other issues other than the lady teaching males. So, she was not in good standing.

The preacher was just on Fox and Friends a few minutes ago, defending his decision. The preacher said that there were "many issues" regarding her dismissal and that the Scripture was quoted as a legal basis for her dismissal because she had disagreements with the church which she had taken to lawyers in the past. He would not elaborate on her "other issues" even when pressed. He would only say that it was "multi-faceted" and that the entire board was in agreement that she should be removed.

Really sad when a church has to air its dirty laundry in public. God can't be very pleased.

Thanks for the info.

So they claim, but nothing has been mentioned. After 50 years I have a problem believing it was performance.

My father-in-law has been a Southern Baptist pastor for over fifty years. He uses the term Sunday School to apply to both adult and children classes. His son, a pastor who holds a doctorate, also calls adult and children classes Sunday School. Many of the churches I have attended use the term in the same way.

Thank GOD we are under the new covenant; otherwise, I'd be hardpressed to wear clothing that is never of two different materials (forbidden in Leviticus), and not to mention, that one week of the month when I'd be banished from the house. Yeah, right.

Yes, we are. The very same one that gives us the Scripture in question, written by Paul. He makes it clear about the roles in Church. Our modern world refuses to obey Him in most things, so why should this be any different.

As for clothing (Leviticus is dead and does not apply under this New Covenant. It is a "schoolteacher".), I wear cotton. Drawers, socks, t-shirts, slacks or shorts, shirts, and most other clothing items. Cotton is cooler and wears well. I don't wear it for religious reasons. Cotton feels good!

And some CHRISTIANS pray through others besides Christ, when it clearly says no one reaches God except through Jesus.

PRAYER:

Matthew 6:5
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Matthew 6:6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

SALVATION:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
