The S.C. Republican Partys sponsorship of An Evening Honoring Rudy Giuliani last week spoke volumes.
It reflected what some said is a shift in attitude toward GOP candidates with more liberal views on social issues.
Theres a greater degree of tolerance and acceptance, party officials said.
Giuliani, who rose to national prominence for his take-charge performance after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, supports gay rights, gun control and legalized abortion, which puts him at odds with most Republicans.
Nevertheless, he has traveled the country extensively on behalf of GOP candidates this year while acknowledging his own interest in a possible 2008 presidential bid.
Although his liberal stance on social issues is likely to disqualify him with religious conservatives, the former New York City mayor remains in great demand as a speaker before Republican groups.
In this visit his first major political trip to South Carolina Giuliani attended a fundraiser for conservative GOP congressional candidate Ralph Norman, the one-term state representative who is challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt, a 24-year House veteran in a hotly contested race in the 5th District.
Giuliani ended the day in Charleston at a star-studded $2,500-a-couple fundraiser for the state Republican Party.
He packed the place.
Rudy is a very popular figure, GOP chairman Katon Dawson said. We didnt have any problem with him coming.
Giuliani, affectionately known as Americas mayor, is seen as middle-of-the-road by most voters nationally, according to Rasmussen Reports, an electronic survey company.
It found 36 percent of Americans see him as a political moderate, 29 percent said conservative, and 15 percent said liberal. Twenty percent are not sure.
Former state GOP chairman Barry Wynn said the party needs to take a fresh look at the way it regards new voters, especially those new residents whove settled along the coast and are starting to have an impact on state party politics.
Those voters tend to be more progressive in outlook and are more inclined to support someone like Giuliani.
I think Rudy could be more popular in South Carolina than most people would think, Wynn said.
The debate in 2008 isnt going to be about tax cuts, abortion or Social Security reform Republican favorites.
The overarching issues this time will be national security and leadership, Wynn said. Everything else will fit under that.
Such a scenario favors Giuliani, Greenville consultant Chip Felkel said.
Francis Marion University political scientist Neal Thigpen, a GOP activist, said Giuliani is in a special category.
Hes a glittering personality with star quality who can get away with supporting legalized abortion and gay rights.
His position on those social issues would not hurt him as bad over the long haul as one may think. If John McCain had the same position, it would hurt him a lot worse.
Needless to say, the hard-core religious right wont surrender territory on social issues. Theyd rather go down in flames than win.
But unless terrorists no longer are a threat to the United States, national security and leadership will be at the top of the issues heap in 2008.
Voters wont be concerned about gay rights or abortion. What matters most will be their own security in a volatile world.
And the candidate who stands to benefit is Giuliani.
If your house is on fire, Wynn said, you want a guy with the hose.
>>>You still link a claim that he is an Official. That is where I got the idea you were claiming him to be an "officer".

Even if I except the 13% (not all of which are even Republicans) 90% of that 13% will vote for anyone rather than Hillary. Almost all of those here willing to support Guiliani would fit in your 13%.
Then it means even LESS than I thought.
>>>There was no anti-war movement in December of 2001.
WRONG
STONEWALL Veterans' Association is made up of the same group that created and supported the Vietnam Veteran's Against the War Movement.
See David Mixner of the Vietname War Moratorium and Clinton who worked with him.
vvaw.org went ACTIVE again on June 2001.
They then spun off the Americans agains the Iraq War movement.
I've read through a lot of these posts but not all and see where you are accused of "endorsing" a democrat.
I don't have to read all of them to say, it's a damn'd lie.
No Rudi, no way, ever.
Cocial conservatives are smart enought to know that Rudy would be as bad as the Beast for OUR concerns. We cannot vote for him. Cannot, as in core principles.
Fair warning.
Don't bother me. Your arguments gets all this stuff posted. :)
The RSS feeds brings it to many computers.
You may not care about socialists movements. There are plenty that do care.
We religious conservatives and gun owners can hold our collective nose and vote for McCain if he's nominated, due primarily to the national defense issue. But I for one will not vote for Rudy under any circumstance, and I think I speak for millions of other pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment Republicans.
If we absolutely HAVE to have someone in the Oval Office who is a liberal advocate for gun banning, abortion "rights", homosexual special "rights", etc, etc, and who will appoint judges and Justices of the same stripe as him or her self we may as well have a Democrat one as a Republican one.
Go ahead and do it. See how far it gets you. In the loonie bin probably.
I thought I fixed that typo
Dear justshutupandtakeit,
"Almost all of those here willing to support Guiliani would fit in your 13%."
No, this 13% is the hardcore that just won't vote for a pro-abort. At all. I don't think that a majority of folks at Free Republic are hardcore pro-life, in that they will not vote for a pro-abort for president.
These are not folks merely with socially conservative views, among others. They are the hardcore social conservatives who will not vote for a pro-abort.
In 2004, this crowd went pretty much exclusively for President Bush, who received a little less than 51% of the vote.
Assuming that in 2008, a Republican can get 51% again. Take away that 13% hardcore, won't vote for a pro-abort group, and the Republican is pretty much down to 38%. Take away just HALF that 13%, and the Republican candidate is under 45%.
In that the liberal half of the electorate is NOT in favor of an extreme hawkish prosecution of the war on terror, the Republican candidate isn't going to pick up much support from the liberal side of the electorate.
If nominated, Mr. Giuliani will struggle to exceed 45% of the vote.
By the way, if you want to see how FReepers view the nomination contest, perhaps this poll might be revealing:
"Free Republic Opinion Poll: If the 2008 Republican primary for president were held today and the following candidates were listed on your ballot, which one would you choose?
"Composite Opinion
Tom Tancredo 26.7% 1,645
George Allen 19.1% 1,176
Newt Gingrich 17.6% 1,086
Rudy Giuliani 13.3% 818
Jeb Bush 9.3% 573
Sit it out 4.0% 244
Mitt Romney 3.5% 217
Mike Pence 2.9% 179
John McCain 2.7% 167
Bill Frist 0.9% 53"
It seems that Mr. Giuliani could only manage fourth place among folks here at FR.

Islamics weapon of choice is a bomb - time and time again we have seen that. They are not coming to your home and they prefer areas where they can do the most damage like NYC, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, etc. No one wants to fight you in the streets. They couldn't care less about 1 person. The goal is to kill as many as possible. That's the big cities where there are huge populations.
Dear justshutupandtakeit,
"Abortion is not even close to the importance of protecting the nation from the Islamofascists."
I disagree. I think that Islamofascists are a real and present danger to the United States. However, they haven't murdered 40 million Americans. I don't think they ever will. They aren't murdering a million and a quarter Americans per year. I don't think they ever will.
Neither do I think that they will ever defeat the United States by force of arms.
However, there are ways that they can defeat us. They can defeat us in the same way that they're defeating Western Europe - immigration and procreation. As my friend ArrogantBustard says in his tagline, Western Civilization is aborting itself to death.
The Islamofascists aren't.
But even if the Islamofascists don't all come here to the United States, we're hollowing out our culture, our civilization. We condemn the Islamofascists for their lack of respect for life, but our words ring hollow as we permit over a million murders per year of helpless unborn people. We are vitiating our reasons for fighting them.
Even the most militarily powerful societies will collapse once they lose their way morally and civilizationally.

Why was it wrong when Clinton did it but ok for Rudy?
FDR has NO MILITARY EXPERIENCE.
You can't beat something with nothing; and I do not see a name that is going to fire up the base.
We better invent one pretty soon.
Bush isn't running for President. Rudy Giuliani is.
