The hucksters who two years ago tried to peddle the fraudulent Freedom Tower Silver Dollar are back with an even more offensive scheme for trading on the memory of 9/11 for money. They go by the name of the National Collector's Mint of Port Chester, N.Y., and they're marketing a monstrosity called the 2001-2006 World Trade Center Commemorative over the Web and on late-night cable TV. You've got to see it to believe it.

I saw that too, Sarge ... disgusting.
Just listen to Tom Kean, that ba$tard, constantly complaining that the administration didn't take the advice of the commission.
Well, pardon my french, but to HELL with the commission and everyone on it.
I have heard from a very reliable source in the genuine numismatic community that Goldwater Jr. is one apple that fell very far from that tree.
I have also heard that the companies that sell these products are owned by just a few parent companies. If one gets busted for fraud, they can just shift operations to one of their other front companies.
If you buy one thing from these clowns, count on getting junk mail left and right offering more of these great "deals." My favorites are the "24-karat gold (plated)" coins. In real bullion value, this amount of gold = diddlysquat. You can get more gold digging the fillings out of your own mouth.
Buying coins from an ad in a magazine or from a tv commercial is a bad idea. Better to try your local coin shop or ebay.
They will die.
Time to email AG Spitzer. Since he's running for Governor, and shut 'em down the last time, I'm sure he'll be only too happy to take 'em on again.
Yes - sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh about the quality of A&E one. But, UNITED 93 is definately the one everyone needs to see.
Okay, I'll fax you a keyboard.
Hey Luvy!
Stick to the United 93 out in Sept. It is very very good and as tough as it is, it is worth it. Very respectfully done, no b.s. and quite uplifting in the end, in a strictly substantive way. Don't hesitate to see it.
I saw it in the theater and will buy the DVD when I can.
"...More disgusting would be what would be on a Bill Clinton pop up coin...."
Need I ask what part of that coin would pop up?
Hi there! Haven't seen you for a while. Thanks for the advice...I sure will do that. Though I know I will cry my eyes out, I need to see it.
I don't see what the big deal is.
You will cry, but, I can only tell you that at the end of the movie I was standing up yelling "Get 'em, get 'em get 'em", rooting for the courage of the passengers.
Perhaps I should buy it asap to help bolster my determination.
Tom Kean sold out. He has called in on Airhead Amerika.
(yes, I listen to the local affiliate to get in on the "talking points" that many Twin Cities DFL'ers brainlessly spout)
BTW, the fitting memorial to the World Trade Center - rebuild it.
And any terrorist who dares to consider wrecking it gets dropped from 1500 feet AGL.
Come on, CNN has to make money somehow.
I think we all could use a dose of that...especially with the 5th anniversary coming up. It breaks my heart every year!
Made of 15 mg. of 24-kt gold and 15 mg. of .999 pure silver - the silver miraculously recovered from a bank vault found under tons of debris at Ground Zero - the medallion sells for $29.95. Of that, the mint promises to donate $5 to official 9/11 family charities and memorials. As I said in the post, people can decide what to waste their money on for themselves. I think this is grave robbing. The company can easily afford to be so cynically charitable. The Journal News newspaper had the precious metals analyzed and discovered they were worth about 32 cents.
Nobody's robbing anybody anymore than numerous other advertising gimmicks are....the customers are willingly buying them.
Due to poor sleeping habits I watch a lot of late night TV and see this ad often. Makes me want to scream. I wouldn't care if they sold it for a penny, it would be over priced and if they gave it away I still wouldn't want it. It's disgusting. This is not what is meant by "we shall never forget." The truth is the skyline in Manhattan is no longer graced by the towers. They are gone forever and close to 3000 people with them. How that happened I will never forget and we should be doing EVERYTHING possible to stop those responsible. Those who would have us all die. Gold colored coins are worthless. What's the attraction anyway?
Bring down jihad at all costs.
It isn't even an ounce of silver... It is only PLATED.
An ounce of silver would plate two thousand + of the coins they are selling.
And of course that limit of five per customer is nonsense. A couple of weeks ago, just for grins, I went to their website and ordered 30,000 of them, and their shopping cart accepted the order.
(Of course, I DIDN'T enter my credit card information and complete the order.)
All these privately minted 'collectors coins' are scams, even the ones that actually use solid silver or gold... The price is such that the buyers will never break even on them unless unless they can find someone even dumber than they were.
And it also really Irks me when they pretend or imply that they are an official govenment mint as many of them do.
Buy them if you if you like the artwork (which IS sometimes fairly nice, although these particular ones are really crappy from an artistic standpoint) or if they make you feel better about yourself, but don't delude yourself that you are buying any thing actually of value.
