Expert: 'Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?'
By Sue Lindsay and Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News August 17, 2006
Legal and law enforcement experts have begun to express outward skepticism about claims by a teacher that he killed JonBenet Ramsey.
John Mark Karr told reporters in a press conference last night in Thailand he was with the 6-year-old beauty queen when she died nearly 10 years ago. He said the death was accidental, as part of a botched kidnapping effort. When asked how he entered the familys Boulder home, he declined to comment.
But investigators in Thailand have told the Associated Press that Karr has made several other statements to them, including claims that he picked JonBenet up from school the day she was killed and that he drugged her. JonBenet was on Christmas vacation at the time, so school was not in session, and there was no evidence of drugs found in JonBenets body during the autopsy.
So far, there is no paper trail of Karr being in Colorado. Police in Boulder said today that they have no record of ever having contact with him.
Denver defense lawyer Larry Pozner said Karr's news conference confession, televised late last night, was bizarre.
"Is this just an obsessive guy craving his 15 minutes of fame? There are those people who confess under circumstances where we immediately know, this is real. This isnt one of them," Pozner said. "We have to withhold judgment because he has not given enough facts for us to decide: Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?"
Denver lawyer and former prosecutor Craig Silverman expressed similar reservations.
"This confession is nonsensical and it appears to be delusional. To claim this was an accident is ridiculous. It's hard to imagine a more intentional, deliberate murder than hitting a girl with sufficient force to split her skull open and to fashion a garrote and twist it until she stops breathing."
A former investigator knowledgeable about the case watched a press conference by Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy this morning and said he was concerned about what she said - and didnt say.
"Her statements about, 'I wish that we could have continued (the investigation) in this vein, rather than in the public eye,' I agree with her in that regard. Because, for her sake, I hate to predict whats going to come down if this whole things falls apart and they drag a guy 12,000 miles back from Bangkok only to get his 15 minutes of fame and a free ticket back to America."
Thailand?
His pants were so high, he was practically wearing them around his neck. Obviously not wearing his own clothes, very ill fitting...so what did the Thai cops do with Karr's clothes? No belt, and he looks as if he has a screw loose.
I clarified myself later and said this fellow fled the US to avoid prosecution. Sorry I misworded earlier.
I don't believe we banish citizens unless they are extradited for trials for crimes committed out of country, or treason.
"It is hard to imagine being chained to a wall in a small dark stone cell stinking of sh** & pi** with 12+ other prisoners, one bucket for defecation, savage rats attacking you while you sleep, cockroaches, beatings & worse!"
Well at least they don't put panties on your head over there.
This is getting more and more ridiculous. What is he, the Lee Harvey Oswald of the Ramsey murder? :-)
I was kind of skeptical about this guy. Especially with the ransom note.Leaving a ransom note doesn't seem like something a child molester would do.
Well, that throws another wrench into it.
So why all the reports yesterday about him being arrested in Thailand on some sort of sexual perversion charges? I don't remember the exact term used.
Geez, it's gettin' so ya can't believe ANYTHING you hear on the news or read in the newspapers.
I am leaning towards whack-job too. When pressed for details about the murder he had "no comment"
I am guesssing when facing life in a bangkok jail for child sex crimes -vs- life in jail in US, he chose US.
Second guess- he goes back to BKK to jail when his confession is proven to be a fraud
Hey I've been wrong before and decidedly shameless aboutmaking new predictions.
I thought Osama was dead in Toa Bora- I guess he isn't but I bet his ears are still ringing....
not only that- but breaking into a house THEN sitting down to write a two page ransom note...
(paper, pen were FROM THE HOUSE - Handwriting similar to mothers)
book
Question about the note...Why leave a note? He didn't take the body with him.
BUT, today he said it was an accident. Now, leaving the note makes sense. It becomes proof it was an accident.
It's him. Read the letter. You can see the "character" of the writer and it's a match.
Remember, his resume listed hobbies: Writing, ACTING. What we saw on TV was the "actor". You could almost see him "enter the role" just before he spoke each time.
Plenty of conflicting reports out there...DNA evidence etc. Keeping the facts straight are kind of hard to do in todays MSM
LOL! I don't know if he's trolling, I hardly watch the creep anymore. I wish I had seen that thread though, cause Lamont does bear a striking resemblance to the guy. Creepy!
I think him being a whack job is a given. I also would bet he was capable of the crime. Did he do it? That's a different question. They have DNA from under her fingernails. If there's a match, you can put him away. If not, he's still dangerous, and should not see the light of day again.
And the more reports I hear the more jumbled it gets. Conflicting junk info from everywhere.
I agree. He said what he wanted you to hear: "It was an accident". He even said "That makes it 2nd degree". But he also said "no comment" to some questions. If you answer the big questions, why avoid the little ones with "no comment". His resume lists writer/actor as hobbies.
