Rice calls Lebanese PM to warn him that if the UN Lebanon resolution is not implemented, “We will not be responsible for the consequences”

August 13, 2006, 10:18 PM (GMT+02:00)

Earlier, Israeli FM Tzipi Livni put in urgent calls to the US secretary and the French foreign minister in an effort to salvage the ceasefire from Iranian-backed Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s 12th-hour retraction of his consent.

Read the post on "Most Hypocritcal Nation" for a different view of what most (non-shiite) Lebanese want...

It never ceases to amaze me that people read what comes from the msm and believe whatever slant it has at face value. The public has so little real information. That goes to answer the question of why consistent character is an important asset in our elected officials. We must be able to trust them.

Thanks very much for your posts on this topic. I appreciate learning from the experience of others. Saves me a lot of heartache. ; )

"Then there's the report from IDF of 30 tanks lining up on the Syrian border... "

Syria is removing the minefields to give the Hizb'allah an escape route, and they moved in the tanks to provide cover in hopes Israel won't airstrike the area and make it impassable, like they have everything else.

In a few days, everyone will see this is the case.

Well. It seems there are a few intelligent, open-minded, forward looking people left on FR.

I can't believe the crop of doomsayers, and "Olmert is a failure".

They are worse than the DEMS and DU during Bush's opening months in Iraq.

Which part of the border? Golan with Syria or Bekaa with Lebanon? Either way, that's mighty close to Damascus.

I suspect the Syrians have upped their alert level, and this is Israel's way of signaling that they see what the Syrians are doing.

Olmert leaves something to be desired. The IDF, on the other hand, is doing the best it can with what it has got. Common Tator has outlined pretty much what I think is going on, as well.

However, Boy President may do something stupid to try to relieve pressure on the Hez on the assumption that the Americans will hold the Izzies back. Stupid.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Out of curiosity (and you don't have to answer if you need to go) did you believe that way at the time?

Absolutely. I lived on the streets of Oakland for a decade. The behavior of our enemy is no less opportunistic and ruthless than any drug gang, and a good bit more clear-headed (but for blind hatred).

The only thing I allowed at the time that operated on the converse was the time it would take to move troops by sea for an invasion, but as far as strafing columns of trucks goes, we had control of the no-fly zone in Kurdistan so IMO, there was no excuse to let the convoys get out of the country.

I fully expect to wake up tomorrow, flip on the TV, and still see the network 'danger boys' still wearing helmets and flak jackets with boom-booms in the background.

If they're not, they'll be PO'd at having allocated staffed the extra union camera people without a show.

Do you think that was an administration error or a military call? Is it possible we didn't want to tip our hand?

One of the great ironies of the Iraq operation was that the one thing we always promised ourselves to learn from VN was to let the military make the decisions. For the most part, I believe, they have. As a result the President takes flak for it. Go figure.

BTW, CommonTator's post 53 is excellent if you haven't caught that.

Sort of OT here, but: A couple of weeks ago, there was a flame-fest thread here, I was the flamee. At that time, I thought about making a list of posters to avoid because something they said ticked me off (you were not involved). Then I said "Nah, ya gotta judge each post on its merit."

Your explanation of where the troops might be deployed, how the Hez will be brought to their (hungry) knees made me glad I don't judge the post by the postee. Thanks for a very good explanation!

Thanks for a very good explanation

Lots of things make sense now. I was puzzled by why IDF would go in clean out a village and then withdraw? They did it over and over. They had to be taking out supplies.. but not the Hezbollah troops. They escaped and then came back.

Then we learn that all the roads in South Lebanon that could be used for resupply were destroyed.

And when they said any cars or trucks moving would be destroyed... HMMMMM

It now appears that when Israel said they had attrited Hezbollah by major percentages they were not talking about how many missiles they had destroyed. They were talking about ammunition and food destroyed.

When they finally deployed the 30 thousand troops, and I saw the first days casualty numbers a lot of pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

For the first time ... the puzzle looks like a pictures ...at least to me.

This in from Reuters.

Jerusalem - Israel believes it will be entitled to use force to prevent Hizbollah from rearming and to clear guerrilla positions out of southern Lebanon after a U.N. truce takes effect, Israeli officials said on Sunday. Israeli officials said such operations are ''defensive'' in nature and therefore permissible under a U.N. Security Council resolution which calls for Israel to halt ''all offensive military operations.''

I have no idea. I do know that our old globalist spook daddy poppa Bush was pushing to go through the UN. A lot of good it did too; look what the CIA did to junior.

The whole thing stinks.

Remember how they were talking about breaking up Iraq into three countries, Kurdistan (independent), Sunniland (under the Hashemites), and a southern Shia area? It made sense to me to trash the deliberately dysfuncional country the British had concocted. Then all of a sudden, nope, we weren't going to do that.

I'll bet it PO'd a LOT of Iraqis, and we sure as heck didn't get anything from the Turks for stiffing the Kurds.

Thanks for the ping. Very interesting collaborating info. Let me know when you see more.

You're really sorted this thing out for me. I appreciate it. I had the pieces, but no box lid to compare them to.

Do you have a special diplomatic smoke and mirrors decoder ring? (Of course, it used to be called "experience." ;-D )

Maybe they already had enough time to get a few more tens thousands of missiles to continue on.

I agree that there are some inexplicable decisions made at the top. I always wonder what happened behind the scenes that lead to it.

Anyway...I'm out of here for this evening. Spent WAY too much of my day puttering around this place. But I enjoyed the conversation.

Have a good one.

daddy poppa Bush

Now that's a new one. He did tend to be a globalist though. Just never heard that name before.

"i have yet to see a Freeper call the IDF cowards. i have seen many call Olmert a coward. i wouldn't go so far since he is seeing much more of the scene than FR folks like us are, but, it does look like Olmert and Halutz blew the game with a very weak, clintonesque (think Bosnia) IAF opening more."

On the thread where the Israeli government voted 24-0 in favor of the cease fire, there were comments to the effect of "they are all cowards", comparisons of Israel to France, and white flags posted. Maybe those comments were directed at the Israeli government and not the IDF.

The Israeli government is tasked with the life and death decision of cease fire too soon and cost Israeli lives or continue the war too long and cost Israeli lives, for freepers to call them cowards regardless of how they voted, in light of the fact that they just successfully fought a two front war, is at best uncalled for stupidity, and at worst fair weathered friends.
