US involved in planning Israel operations -- The New Yorker
Lebanon offensive prelude to strike on Iran
NEW YORK -- The US government was closely involved in the planning of Israel's military operations against Islamic militant group Hezbollah even before the July 12 kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers, The New Yorker magazine reported in its latest issue.
The kidnapping triggered a month-long Israeli operation in South Lebanon that is expected to come to an end on Monday.
But Pulitzer Prize-winning US journalist Seymour Hersh writes that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were convinced that a successful Israeli bombing campaign against Hezbollah could ease Israel's security concerns and also serve as a prelude to a potential US preemptive attack to destroy Iran's nuclear installations.
Citing an unnamed Middle East expert with knowledge of the current thinking of the Israeli and US governments, Israel had devised a plan for attacking Hezbollah -- and shared it with Bush administration officials -- well before the July 12 kidnappings.
The expert added that the White House had several reasons for supporting a bombing campaign, the report said.
If there was to be a military option against Iran, it had to get rid of the weapons Hezbollah could use in a potential retaliation against Israel, Hersh writes.

Seymour Hersh is a rat bastard who betrays his own Jewish people. F*** him and doom on him. Of course he's busy betraying the US when not trying to jam Israel.
It's just a continuation of Seymour's stories.
He needs attention.
Did nobody read beyond the headline?
"Israel had devised a plan for attacking Hezbollah -- and shared it with Bush administration officials -- well before the July 12 kidnappings."
It's unsurprising the Israelis would touch base with the US before taking action. That's quite different from the headline of Bush and Cheney "planning Israeli operations".
Besides, were it "planned" by the US I suspect the munitions the Israelis urgently requested be supplied half way through the operation would have been delivered prior to the first shot.
BUMP! You're right and he thinks he's got a 2-fer here.
What a totally despicable, bitter, little man.
Seymour Hersh ping
Hezbollah is still limping along, but their capabilities have been severely damaged.
It will take time to disarm them because Israel's strategy is for a comprehensive, durable settlement, using military, diplomatic and political means. I think it has a decent chance for success, but time will tell.
Israel is winning the military conflict - but Hezbollah is winning the propaganda war. No matter how badly Hezbollah is beaten, Nasrallah will say they've defeated Israel, and many people are willing to believe him.
Sy Hersh is competing with the leakers at the NY Times. Rats all of them
Hersh will be on CNN Late Edition, 11AM ET.
Whenever I wonder about someone like him I always ask, Who benefits from his reporting, and who suffers?
Can the US in any way benefit from this story? Nope.
Can the terrorists be hurt by the reporting of this story? Nope.
Seymour Hersh....ROTFLMAO.
the report quotes the former official as saying. "When the smoke clears, they'll say it was a success, and they'll draw reinforcement for their plan to attack Iran."
In my judgment it must be the principal foreign policy objective of the United States that Iran not obtain nuclear weapons. I would prefer that Israel strike rather than the United States but I suspect that Israel does not have the wherewithal to pull it off. Indeed, is not clear that the United States itself can with airstrikes alone wreck Iran's nuclear program. Putting boots on the ground is simply not an option.
Interestingly, Hersh's preemptive strike reveals volumes about the mindset of the left. They simply believe Bush is capable of any atrocity.
No, that was Adam Clymer. But we could say that Hersh is a major league Clymer.
oops ...sorry :^)
Of course, the unamed "expert", who else? Prolly just some leftwing lunatic from DU
LOL!
