Great "Thud" photos, alfa6!
Say what you will, the F-105 is atill one of the prettiest and wicked looking aircraft the US ever devised.
Also one of the sturdiest. More than one survived a SAM up the Tailpipe and survived to return to Tahkli, Udorn or Danang.
Nimble at high altitude, the "Thud" was also one of fastest fighters on the deck throughout the Vietnam War.
The 113th TFW at Andrews AFB had "Thuds" from 1976 to 1981.
During my Reserve Weekends just up the road from the 113th, I'd hear the "Thud"'s distinct windup to Military Power and Afterburner. It's J-57 would wind up to a high-pitched scream...
Then there would be three seconds of absolute silence until the AB kicked in with an incredibly loud, explosive BOOM!!! that ruined many an early morning Stand Up formation.
There's no other sound quite like it!
