U.S. Poll: Large Minority Fear, Mistrust Muslims
NewsMax ^ | 11 August 2006

Nearly four in 10 Americans admit having feelings of prejudice against Muslims living in the U.S. – and are in favor of having Muslims carry a special ID, a new Gallup poll reveals.

Also, 22 percent of those surveyed said they would not like to have a Muslim as a neighbor.

Among the findings of the late-July USA Today/Gallup poll:

31 percent of respondents said they would feel nervous if they noticed a Muslim man on their airplane flight, and 18 percent would feel nervous about a Muslim woman flying with them.

Less than half – 49 percent – feel that Muslims living in the U.S. are loyal to this country.

34 percent believe American Muslims are sympathetic to the al-Qaida terrorist organization.

40 percent of respondents said they believe Muslims in the U.S. are not respectful of other religions, and 44 percent said Muslims are too extreme in their religious beliefs.

A slight majority – 52 percent – believe Muslims are not respectful of women.

39 percent said the U.S. should require Muslims to carry a special ID, and 57 percent believe they should undergo more intensive security checks at airports.

39 percent said they "have at least some feelings of prejudice against Muslims,” 59 percent said they did not, and 2 percent had no opinion.

Opinions are different, however, among Americans who are personally acquainted with a Muslim, the poll disclosed.

For example, only 10 percent of those who know a Muslim said they would not want one as a neighbor, and 24 percent believe Muslims should carry a special ID – compared to 50 percent among those who don’t know a Muslim.

I get to see all the bigots and idiots in their true setting.

You want to see bigots and idiots in their natural habitat, go over to Kos or DU (or Tehran) and ask them what they think about Jews and Christians.

Why is it bigoted and idiotic to mistrust Muslims?

kinda like the Yellow Star the Jews had to wear in Berlin in 1939!

Muslims don't need to carry any special kind of ID. They like to advertise themselves.

It used to be that when you saw a woman wearing a head covering and a long black robe, she was a Roman Catholic nun.

A former Muslim co-worker and friend of mine - he has now been a Christian for many years - told me that he would NEVER trust any Muslims or Islamic groups.

The Supreme Court isn't going to like any special ID for Muslims, or Jews, or Mormons, or whatever religion is out of favor at the moment in the country.

It's mildly disturbing to me that 40% of Americans apparently favor doing what nazis did to the Judes in their country.

It's not going to happen, and like you say, it's not terribly hard to identify them anyway.

Almondjoy, you really need to read my post about my former Muslim friend. He knows that Islam is NOT a religion of peace, and that the only "hi-jacking" going on is the one where people are trying to make it a peaceful religion.

Gimme a break. The Jews weren't killing Germans. Your comparison is insulting and just plain stupid.

Well, that's your opinion, and I don't think much of it. The Germans considered the Jews a grave threat. Not from violent acts perhaps, but it's the same mentality.

It's not insulting to point out facts, unless you feel threatened by them.

If you honestly think that our Founding Fathers would have wanted American citizens of a particular religion to be required to carry special ID, then you don't really know what this country is all about or how we came to be, pilgrim.

48% need to take their heads out of the sand.

I don't think that is where they need to take their heads out of.

See this article and this article. They not only illustrate how accurate many stereotypes are but give good pointers on the line between legitimate stereotype and bigotry (the latter being when an individual refuses to accept that an individual can or does have characteristics different from their group stereotype).

"The Germans considered the Jews a grave threat."

A threat to what, "racial purity?" The anti-Semites among the Germans were seething with envy (as is usually the case with anti-Semites) and desperately searching for a scapegoat for their miserable economy and humilating defeat in WW1.

The (negative) sentiments of Americans toward Muslims isn't even remotely comparable.

The sentiments come from very different motivations. There's no question about that.

I have no problem with profiling. I think it's just common sense. We should do more of it, and less of treating us all as if we're terrorists.

I draw the line somewhere earlier than where the government can demand to know your religious beliefs and force you to carry some special ID announcing that fact.

"Nearly four in 10 Americans admit having feelings of prejudice against Muslims"

Fear and distrust are not prejudices if you have a reasonable factual basis for the fear and distrust. E.g., having a fear and distrust of Nazis is not a prejudice.

Thanks. What is that old saying: A pic is worth a thousand words.

Needed a good belly laugh. Thanks.

Of course, doubt if that moron will see much humor as is the case with most muzzies or muzzie lovers/apologists.

The only time they smile is when they beat their wives; after they cut someone's head off or see some infidel blown up.

As Marie Antoinette said: "Let them eat pork."

Oh sorry, does that make be a bigot? I certainly hope so!!!

I am doing a Gordon Ramsey recipe tomorrow night.

Check this out:

Pork-Sausage stuffed boneless Chicken, wrapped in bacon strips. Seared in a pan, then baked for 20 minutes.

I'm serving to some friends with a Concannon Petite Syrah.

Even the burbs will be tasty!
