Threat Level Change for the Aviation Sector

The U.S. threat level is raised to Severe, or Red, for all commercial flights flying from the United Kingdom to the U.S.

The U.S. threat level is raised to High, or Orange for all commercial aviation operating in the U.S., including international flights. Flights from the U.S. to the U.K. are also Orange.

All travelers on commercial U.S. carriers and on all flights into the U.S., please be advised of the following changes to airport screening procedures:

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, sun tan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.
Exception: Baby formula and medicines must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint.

Beverages purchased in the boarding area (beyond the checkpoint) must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted on board the aircraft.

Passengers traveling from the U.K. to the U.S. will be subject to a more extensive screening process.

These measures will be constantly evaluated and updated when circumstances warrant.

How every passenger can assist in security:

Statements made out of ignorance need to be illustrated.

Don't be mad that you should not be trusted with security because you would focus all your efforts on a single ethnic group and leave gaping holes everywhere else.

Also, having a couple of friends who are airline pilots I am convinced that we do, in fact, profle targets. Grandma and you and I get searched to disguise the profiling. This is the only explanation that makes any rational sense.

OK, prepare for some illustration

Don't be mad that you should not be trusted with security because you would focus all your efforts on a single ethnic group and leave gaping holes everywhere else.

Indeed. OK, let's look at your initial post of premature exasperation, when you said:

"Actually, smart-mouth, I recently read an advisory that believes Al Qaeda may utilize elderly Muslims, dressed in civilian clothing for suicide attacks"

What is that trick word there? Did I hear you say MUSLIMS?

Pot, Kettle, Black!

"PS: A person could slip explosive components into an elderly citizen's handbag, completely unnoticed and very easily and then retrieve these onboard for assembly into a bomb."

PPS: All handbags are X-rayed prior to passengers boarding the plane. Now kindly explain how a terrorist is going to "easily" slip bomb components into Aunt Ida's purse?

In your zeal to condemn what you call racial profiling, it sounds like you're engaging in ageism in that you presume that senior citizens are too dumb to figure out that they're being exploited.

Your turn bud: "Think before you post"

Agreed, I just wish the US Govt would return the favor.

Baby bottles and liquid prescription medicines will be allowed once they have been ETD tested and the prescriptions are verified.

There must be a baby present.

No jello allowed, either.

In England they're making adult passengers taste test everything. I didn't see that done here, YET. ;^)

Except we see plenty of stories about these Paki looking yahoos in teeshirts waltzing on by while Grampa is poked and wanded.

It's not the TSA that I am so angry with, it is the INS who let the Egyptian "students" into this country and now look.
Where are they? As of last night, they had three. Where are the others? Two were caught in NJ and one was caught in MI.
The threat level is severe and who is responsible for that?
Our own "asleep at the switch" PC BS happyhead rainbow gov't idiots sitting at a desk and rubber stamping Arab Muslim passports.

Three Muslims caught yesterday afternoon. All planes grounded in England this morning. Our own stupidity will be our undoing. Get the Muslims out of this country. They are opening up a new front in the war right here. How can we be so damn stupid?

"Think before you post."

Dude, they can't keep drugs, guns and all other kinds of unauthorized items out of prisons. There is no way to keep the airplanes completely secure. Especially when the airports pay the cleaners and baggage people $10 an hour.

The terrorists are trying to change their attack profile but there is one common denominator in 99% of the attacks and it aint Grandma or two year olds. Its about applying your resources where it will do the most good.

If an attack indeed is foiled, then we are lucky. As Secretary Rice puts it, when guarding against terrorists, we have to be right 100% of the time whereas the enemy only has to be right once. The best defense is a good offense, and the surest way for us to prevent attacks is to take the fight to the enemy.

The timing is interesting. The EU court shot down the US/EU PNR agreement (providing info on incoming airline passengers) some months ago, and the EU commission is studying the ruling, with the current PNR remaining in effect only until September 30, 2006.

So why wouldn't the conspirators wait until then, when the airline security bar on international flights will inevitably be lowered?

It appears the execution of the plot was imminent, so my guess is that a) jihadists find it difficult to alter long-range plans and b) the tourist season is in full swing in August, overtaxing whatever security exists, and c) 'tis also the season of foreign student visa holders checking in for the fall college term -- or not checking in, as per the 11 wandering Egyptians.

I'll speculate that the plot was intended to be carried out on Sept. 11th - for obvious reasons - but the authorities prudently decided to move in now.

Can we please keep the rancor down today

This is a DISCUSSION board, not a lick the government's backside board If you don't like what people say about the TSA's silly rules, go have yourself a good cry. ...

this is a day we need to stay focused on the real enemy....the jihadists....not the TSA

Focusing.. focusing .. focusing. Hmmm that doesn't seem to be doing much. MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT, ESPECIALLY THE TSA SHOULD "FOCUS" ON MIDDLE EASTERN MALES. Maybe the government should do something about the millions of illegal immigrants - some significant fraction of which are not here to do us any good. Yep I feel ever so much safer not being allowed to carry soda on the plane, but that's OK because I'm "focused" of islam now. Thanks for that wonderful advice..

Wasn't there a guy, several weeks ago, with hollowed out shoe heels, batteries and a clock who was stopped by security, then let go.

"PPS: All handbags are X-rayed prior to passengers boarding the plane. Now kindly explain how a terrorist is going to "easily" slip bomb components into Aunt Ida's purse?"

Erik has a point. IEDs can be made out of a lot of everyday-looking, common, ordinary stuff that would be hard to detect, if the different components were divided up into different bags and then assembled later on the plane.

TSA does have a hard job.

Somebody slick puts a 9 volt battery in this bag, some wire in that one, a watch or some other timer in another and the explosive disguised as a tube of toothpaste in yet another and then puts it all together after the plane has left the ground and we have another disaster.

The problem is modern IEDs don't look like the devices Wile E. Coyote tried to use on the Roadrunner. ;^)

What is that trick word there? Did I hear you say MUSLIMS?

No, the focus is ELDERLY......which you claim we are wasting our time on screening.

I would like to know if you could visually identify an elderly Muslim from an elderly Christian if they are dressed the same? Or are you one of those guys who can spot criminals without a second thought?

Now kindly explain how a terrorist is going to "easily" slip bomb components into Aunt Ida's purse?

How much time do you spend at airports? Do you watch people?

Watch the elderly....many are in a stupor from medication or whatever.......it would be child's play to put an object into their bag, and let them carry it onboard.

A large percentage of flights now carry the disabled. Have you seen the wheelchairs in airports? How tough would it be to get something into their bags when they cannot turn around or look under their seat?

Your initial charge is that grandma is not going to be threat because TSA is wasting its time screening them.

I purport that you are ignorant of the threats out there. Al Qaeda is not the only terrorist group. There are many, many others that would like to make a name for themselves by pulling off a big event that have nothing to do with Muslims.

As I said...you are myopic.
