They just say "medicines" that would include such as Pepto Bismol, Maalox etc.
Yes, I believe you're correct. A passenger would probably lose their Pepto Bismol, if they're unwilling or don't have the time to put it in their checked baggage, but the TSA won't take a legitimate prescription for say insulin away that a passenger might need in an 'in flight' emergency.
