Police statement on airline bombing plot

LONDON (Reuters) - Following is the full text of a statement issued by London Deputy Commissioner, Paul Stephenson on Thursday morning:

"We are confident that we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction and commit mass murder.

The Commissioner has been fully briefed and he is at New Scotland Yard today. He and I want to pay tribute to officers from the Met's Anti-Terrorist Branch and the security services for the work they have undertaken to disrupt these activities.

We believe that the terrorists' aim was to smuggle explosives onto airplanes in hand luggage and to detonate these in flight.

We also believe that the intended targets were flights from the UK to the USA.

Overnight we have arrested 21 people. The majority of those arrests have been in London but we have also made arrests in Thames Valley and Birmingham. We are currently searching a number of addresses.

We are grateful to our colleagues in other force areas for their support.

As the operation got under way we spoke to community leaders to make them aware that a major anti-terrorist operation was taking place but without giving specific details about locations. This extensive dialogue will continue throughout the operation.

We would like to reassure the public that this operation was carried out with public safety upper most in our minds. This is a major operation, which will inevitably be lengthy and complex. The UK is now at the highest possible level of alert.

We will consider the threat in its wider sense and take whatever action is necessary to protect people in London and throughout the country.

Measures have already been put in place to restrict hand luggage taken onto aircraft. This will inevitably cause significant delay and we ask people to remain calm, patient and vigilant at this very difficult time.

Put simply this was a plot to commit mass murder on an unimaginable scale."

Man! I sure hope that nobody's rights were violated in detecting this plot! If so, I's sure the ACLU will be all over this like stink on you-know-what! < /sarcasm >

Ain't that the truth....
Their "rights" must be "protected" even if it kills us....

How can this be labeled unimaginable scale? How many people on an airplane? OVer 3,000? I'm not downlplaying it...but that's a bit exagerated isn't it? Was it more than one place perhaps?

= = = = =

Exagerated? Maybe not. How about this scenario:
--10 airplanes headed to major U.S. cities, each plane with an average of 200 people.

--One terrorist on each plane releases bubonic plague into the ventilation system.

-- Each of the infected passengers passes on the infection to 100 people in the next ten days.

Total: 200,000 Americans with bubonic plague

Now, that is merely an imaginative scenario, and no reason why anyone should panic.
However. . .just because the authorities say "bomb threat" doesn't necessarily mean they are actually dealing with a bomb threat.

When the time comes to start engaging the enemy in direct combat, start with him.

Probably will be no need to go after him. He (and his puppy) will on the front doorstep whimpering and begging to be protected.

This type of thinking is putting us in peril. Pakistan is not a real ally. At best they are, on occasion, an ally of convenience when the head of the country fears the same terrorist who want to kill us also want to kill him.

In the WOT, we need the Islamic Republic of Pakistan [the official name.] There are some reports that Pakistan aided in the uncovering of this most recent plot to blow up US planes. Any plan to bar all nationals from Islamic countries will hinder whatever cooperation we now receive from Pakistan. FYI: I believe that tribal areas of Pakistan are providing sanctuary to UBL and the Taliban. Also, the Balucis in Pakistan are ground zero in the WOT. Alienating the Pakistani government will not be helpful in combatting these groups.

We had the Soviet Union as an ally against Hitler. We need Pakistan in much the same way.

Turkey is periodically an ally when they think it will help them get aid but, as we have seen by their refusal to allow troops through their country during the invasion of Iraq, their real allegiance is to their cult/religion.

Turkey is a member of NATO and as such, we have existing treaty obligations with one another. We have military bases in Turkey and sell them arms. Turkey is also the third largest recipient of military aid after Israel and Egypt. They may have prevented (by a narrow margin in their parliment) the 4th ID from transiting their country and denied us use of their airspace in our invasion of Iraq, but they are still our ally. Would you advocate closing our military facilities in Turkey, banning all arms sales to them, and calling for their removal from NATO?

Indonesia is not, and never will be, an ally.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country and has been an ally in the WOT. Bush has been slowly lifting the ban on military aid to Indonesia, which was banned due to human rights violations in East Timpor. The embargo on commercial sales of non-lethal defense articles has been lifted and contact between the two militaries is on the rise. For fiscal year 2006, President Bush has requested $800,000 in IMET, up from the $459,000 that Congress froze in 2004. The Congressional Budget justification for 2006 notes that "Indonesia’s contribution to the Global War on terrorism is also a vital U.S. interest."

India can be an ally as 90% of it's citizens are non-muslims. Muslims are the enemy of India as much as they are the enemy of the U.S.

13.4% of India's population or 134 million people are muslims. The President of India, A.P.J. Abdul KALAM, is a Muslim. Militant Islamic fundamentalism is the enemy of India, not muslims.

I consider any true muslim in this country i.e. those that believe in the koran, as enemies. I am an infidel to them and never can be an equal or fellow citizen. They do not believe in our form of government nor our system of justice.

There are 4 to 6 million American muslims in this country. How do you propose to deal with these "enemies?" What should be done with their Mosques and the practice of their religion?

I do not believe in shutting our Country to all foreigners, but I do believe we can, and should, be more selective in who we allow to enter and remain in the United States.

We have laws that do just that. We just need to do a better job of enforcing our existing laws and securing our borders.

It is thinking like yours that plays into the hands of our enemy, militant Islamic fundamentalism. They want to make this into a religious war rather than against their narrow radical movement, which is a fringe group that is very small in numbers.

Thanks for the info. That 'accident' never sat well with me, though I am not sure why they would target a flight to the Dominican Republic (if I recall correctly).

No, there were no Lutherans this time. But I have to object to your comment as it implies that Mohammedism is a religion. It is no more of a religion than Mafiaism. Mohammed wanted to raise an army to conquer the world. To do so he developed a scam to promise idiot Arabs (yes, I know that is redundant) 72 virgins if they kill Mohammed's enemies.

What we need to do is to insist that our elected leaders declare Mohammedism to be an organized criminal activity and NOT a religion and then take action accordingly.

Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport has just issued a warning--passengers are being told to pour out all liquids before boarding. This includes bottled water, cologne, contact lens solutions, lotion and hair gel.

I read the TSA Threat Level Statement just a moment ago. But it is not clear if this is for carry-on baggage only or also includes checked baggage.

When I saw how long the series of articles was, I clicked on the Amazon link. I wonder how many of the reviewers who thought she was making it all up still think so.

How you doing these days? DC misses you.

He neglects to say that 8 YEARS of Clinton/Gore/Demagogue "preventive diplomacy" brought Israel and the world to this point...... no one in the Arab League, UN, EU, or "international community" is willing to support a real solution.....

Yes, I scanned through her various threads on womenswallstreet.com Amazing how many people have their heads in the sand, still. Once again, domestic issues and my daily life are small when compared to fighting terrorism.

I miss DC and my FReeper friends but I am doing well. I am working to build my business but I love being up here. I will be visiting Maryland in September to see my parents. I'll try to catch a Friday night FReep but my time will be limited.

Interesting:

Hedgecock, subbing for Rush, is saying that all the ingredients these perps might have had can be purchased inside the airport terminal stores, after one passes through security.

[What ingredients? hmmmm.]

If you really believe that this is not a religious war (if you can call islam a religion), you need to open your eyes. Islam has been at war with infidels, the rest of the world, since the cult was founded. Muslims are now at war on every continent except Antarctica (and they might be there too but I don't know that). From Europe to Africa, from China to South America, from India to the Philippines, from Bali to the Middle East, all over the world jihadists are on a murderous march.

There is no possibility of winning a war if you don't recognize who your enemy is. It might be scary to some people that our enemy could number in the hundreds of millions, but that does not change the facts.

Muslims were not a real concern to us before they got enough oil wealth to fund their jihads. Now, however, they have the wealth to buy the technology that can threaten our very existence. Those who believe, against all factual evidence, that our enemy is " a fringe group that is very small in numbers", put all of us in peril.
