Police statement on airline bombing plot
LONDON (Reuters) - Following is the full text of a statement issued by London Deputy Commissioner, Paul Stephenson on Thursday morning:
"We are confident that we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction and commit mass murder.
The Commissioner has been fully briefed and he is at New Scotland Yard today. He and I want to pay tribute to officers from the Met's Anti-Terrorist Branch and the security services for the work they have undertaken to disrupt these activities.
We believe that the terrorists' aim was to smuggle explosives onto airplanes in hand luggage and to detonate these in flight.
We also believe that the intended targets were flights from the UK to the USA.
Overnight we have arrested 21 people. The majority of those arrests have been in London but we have also made arrests in Thames Valley and Birmingham. We are currently searching a number of addresses.
We are grateful to our colleagues in other force areas for their support.
As the operation got under way we spoke to community leaders to make them aware that a major anti-terrorist operation was taking place but without giving specific details about locations. This extensive dialogue will continue throughout the operation.
We would like to reassure the public that this operation was carried out with public safety upper most in our minds. This is a major operation, which will inevitably be lengthy and complex. The UK is now at the highest possible level of alert.
We will consider the threat in its wider sense and take whatever action is necessary to protect people in London and throughout the country.
Measures have already been put in place to restrict hand luggage taken onto aircraft. This will inevitably cause significant delay and we ask people to remain calm, patient and vigilant at this very difficult time.
Put simply this was a plot to commit mass murder on an unimaginable scale."

Don't be fooled: I think this is the "Attu-Kiska" for an al-Qaeda "Midway." This was the diversion. It's too far out from 9/11. And I think what's coming will dwarf this.

Detroit is an International airport, I do believe you can fly to London from Detroit, or to any on the other major cities in Europe, But most of the flights would route through New York. Detroit is probably the biggest major population of Islamics in the nation or close to it.
My husband tended like that when I married him. He thought I was crazy when I said the MSM was oriented left. When we went into Iraq in 2002, he would listen to CNN coverage at the gym while he worked out. He would come saying awful things about the progress of the war. Then he would sit down with me and watch Fox News. He was quite surprised at the difference in coverage. He had watched and liked Brit Hume for many years. So, ultimately, it was Brit's credibility that convinced my beloved that the MSM was indeed extremely biased. He's still liberal in many ways, but he's a lot more informed and doesn't fall for the misinformation he finds on MSM and CNN.
Michael Smerconish has also written about that incident. He is a local talk show host and has a web site. He's also written several books about air security.

In "The Globe and Mail" discussions forum here, the lefties are complaining about security measures, and civil liberties. They are also, of course, saying this is all just a conspiracy to get G.Bush's approval ratings up. Waiting for them to realise that their views won't save them. The terrorists don't care. The mass murder these terrorists committ is unbiased, as I am quite sure that many of the people they would have murdered today are some of the very people who would appease them.
