PRAGUE, August 8, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The United States has imposed sanctions on two major Russian arms dealers -- state arms exporter Rosoboroneksport and the aviation firm Sukhoi -- for allegedly selling high-tech equipment to Iran. The August 4 move has been widely condemned in Russia as an "unfriendly act" aimed at crippling Russia's arms industry.
It comes against the backdrop of strained bilateral relations in recent weeks. Moscow and Washington have failed to reach agreement on Russia's World Trade Organization bid and continue to disagree on resolving the Middle East conflict and on dealing with Iran's nuclear program. And during a recent high-profile Moscow meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez inked arms deals worth about $1 billion. RFE/RL's Russian Service spoke with Nikolai Zlobin, the director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Washington-based Center for Defense Information, about the U.S. sanctions.

I don't know when they started for Syria, but I know we've had sanctions on Iran since the late 70's.

Okay, and where are our sanctions on Iran and Syria? We're selling arms to Iran and Syria? Got a source for that?

This is what the Clinton Admin should have done years ago when the Russians started selling arms to Iran, but instead Gore conspired with Chernomyrdin to cover it up.

Right now we're going through the motions of having the United Nations place sanctions on Iran. Perhpas you are right and we already have some in place. If we could do more, we should. If we can't, then I stand corrected. Waiting for the U.N. to do something is like waiting on the dead to do something.

Sanctions don't have to involve weapons. I didn't state we were providing weapons to Iran. Please provide a source where I did.

If you'll remember a bit of history, trading with Iran was one of the big things that Marc Rich (the fugitive that Bill Clinton pardoned) got in trouble for.
