FBI Interested in Large Prepaid Cell Phone Purchases Posted 8/3/2006 06:06 PM

Store clerks in Grafton say people have been coming into their stores and buying several phones at a time. Story by Sarah Kapis Email | Bio

Folks at the Dollar General in Grafton say in the past few days, several men have come into the store attempting to buy large numbers of prepaid phones. However, store policy only allows a customer to buy two phones at a time, in fact, they are locked away from the general public.

The clerks say after they were in the Dollar General, the men went to the Grafton Walmart to try to purchase more of the phones.

Grafton police found one man during a traffic stop. They say he had hundreds of prepaid phones in his car.

There is no word on what the men planned to do with the phones or why they bought so many, but the incident was later turned over to the FBI for an investigation.

The owner of Country Roads Communications says the allure of the prepaid phones is the freedom that come with them. However, the FBI is not ready to say that the phones are being used for illegal or criminal purposes.

"Prepaids are hard to track, so they're used alot for illegal operations," said Vince Cafazza.

"We are aware that there are a number of purchases throughout the state. Large purchases of trac phones. We are interested in the purchases because they are unusual," said Dan Caldwell, FBI special agent. "We also understand that a number of the larger stores in the area are aware of the purchases. We are not aware of any criminal activity associated with the purchases at this point."

Caldwell says if you notice someone trying to buy large quantities of these type of phones, you can contact your local police or the FBI.

This specific article mentions nothing about illegals or even foreignors. For all we know, it was an American citizen who tried to make the purchase.

I'd be really, really interested in hearing what reason somone might give for buying 100 cell phones at retail prices. I can't think of any.

Someone might have a big group going camping . A company may want them to keep on hand for emergencies. If the prices are cheap enough, even at retail, they might want to resell them on eBay. This happens - I bought a bunch of Harry Potter bags a few years ago at retail for about $12 a piece and sold them on eBay for at least a $10 profit each.

This is just off the top of my head. But the way I look at it, if I'm buying a legal product legally, I don't see that I should ipso facto be investigated for doing so.

Uhm, if I recall, the use of a cell phone (as well as the skyphones) on the plane is what caused it's passengers to crash the plane into a field in shanksville. Oh, and talk about a disconnect, since when does a cellphone equate to a hijacked plane?

Not a stretch at all, they are both the government infringing on peoples rights in a totalitarian fashion.

"Not a stretch at all"!!!!!

If you really think that asking someone why they are buying 100 cell phones is the same as genocide in concentration camps - you have a very loose grip on reality.

"How many bombs have been detonated in the USA with a cell phone? How many cell phones are active in the USA?"

Since when do people buy up 100's of cell phones at a time until now?

If someone has dozens and dozens of prepaid cell phones they are likely to be illegally modifying them from limited minutes to unlimited minutes. There is a software hack that can do that. The phones are then resold on the street to people with the promise of unlimited minutes. The hack and modification is a federal crime.

Yes, I know it's my right to report suspicious activity. I have done so many times.

Just curious - what kind of activites have you reported? Do you work at a retail outlet?

Considering the potential for damage using these in the United States, I would not only require limited purchases but also require a legitimate state ID which is registered to get these.

Maybe we need to end that market completely?

It is an issue of national security here IMO.

If you really think the government has any right to ask any citizen why they are purchasing 100 prepiad phones, you have a very loose grip on sanity.

And you call youself a conservative? This is the stuff of fascism.

Take my statement out of context all you want. But it does not change the fact that these devices are used as detonator switches. Aside from a business inventory, what person has a non-criminal interest in driving around with a hundred pre-paid cell phones in a car?

That my fine fettled friend is probable cause.

And what kind of person is driving the car? A person of Islamic dedication?

That my fine fettled friend is more than probable cause but cause for questioning

A refuseal of cooperation by such a sublect would be cause for arrest.

And you call that fascism? I hope that one day you do not have to scrape American guts up off a road to presume such thinking as "fascist" is not true folly.

I await the birth of an American antifascist movement. And the sooner the better.According to your logic, the security measures of our nation during WWII would be fascist?

Outstanding thinking there by finely fettled freind.

See me on August 23rd, and we'll see if you have changed your tune.

Oh, and talk about a disconnect, since when does a cellphone equate to a hijacked plane?

It doesn't and that is not my point. My point is that before 9/11 - no one thought a jet was capable of mass murder.

We now know better.

We have also learned since then that cell phones have been used by terrorists to communicate with their leaders and to detonate explosive devices.

This does not mean that cellphone equals hijacked jet.

You are obviously too obtuse to see the logic.

How much money would you be willing to bet that when 9/11 happens again and kills one of YOUR loved ones - you'd be the first to cry the government hadn't done enough to protect your family?

I didn't say outlaw cell phones, I said maybe they have to outlaw unregistered cell phones in these times of war.

Do you want terrorist using unregistered untraceable phones to kill USA citizens MAN?

My point is that before 9/11 - no one thought a jet was capable of mass murder. Tom Clancy wrote a best selling book in which flying a jet into the Capitol building played a major part and that was several years before 9/11.

So this is what your argument has boiled down to:

"This is America. Life, liberty and the pursuit of whatever the heck you want without government interference. "

Apparently you don't understand the meaning of the word 'conservative'.

My thoughts exactly. This is really a red flag. Note the articles never say whether they are Muslim or of Middle-East origin or anything like that.
