World Celebs: Respect Cuban Sovereignty
Havana, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) Over 400 world notables, including eight Nobel prizewinners, urged the US Monday to respect Cuba's sovereignty, and condemned the threats against its territorial integrity.
The document, "The Sovereignty of Cuba Must be Respected" conveys support to President Fidel Castro, who on July 31 provisionally delegated responsibilities due to his health condition.
Since the announcement, US government officials have been increasingly explicit about Cuba's immediate future," the foreign signatories declared.
The signatories rejected Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez´ pronouncement that this is the moment for a true transition toward democracy, as well as White House spokesman Tony Snow´s offer of humanitarian, economic and other aid to the people of Cuba.
Film directors, writers, social leaders and activists said it is not difficult to imagine the nature of the "assistance" considering the US administration´s current aggressive foreign policy.
Due to increasing threats against the integrity of a nation, and the peace and security of Latin America and the world, we call on the government of the United States to respect Cuba"s sovereignty and prevent an aggression at all costs.
Among the over 400 signatories were Nobel prizewinners Jose Saramago, Wole Soyinka, Rigoberta Menchu, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Dario Fo, Desmond Tutu, Nadine Gordimer and Zhores Alfiorov.
Also signing were Juan Gelman, Mario Benedetti, Pablo Guayasamin, Maria Rojo and Noam Chomsky, Frei Betto, Ignacio Ramonet, Bernard Cassen, Miguel Bonasso and Manu Chao.
Among others the list includes Ramsey Clark, Tomas Borge, James Petras, Piero Gleijeses, Belen Gopequi, Miguel D"Escoto, Francois Houtart, Eduardo Galeano, Danny Glover, Chico Buarque and Oscar Miemeyer.
12% of all Cubans live in the US. Don't their opinions count?
"Film directors, writers, social leaders and activists..."
In other words, pro-dictatorship...
Too damn bad they don't respect American sovereignity.
We should follow the advice of people like this??
Just looking at Ramsey Clarks name was enough for me...he is a left wing, pin headed, commie pinko pin stripped boob.
Meadow Muffin
How many of those Nobel Prize winners respect U.S. sovereignty to dispose of our terror prisoners as we see fit?
Is Cuba classified as more sovereign than the U.S. that they can treat political prisoners whose only crime is to dissent with Castro's regime as they wish?
Now there's an impressive list!
Why is it the perogative of these foreign "celebrities" to opine as to the future of post-Castro Cuba?
I wonder how many of these academics and actors have signed a document urging Castro to respect the human rights of dissenters and urge fair and real elections?
Not many, I suspect.
And that is the essence of hypocrisy. Nothing more, nothing less.
"Oh, I wish I was an Oscar Miemeyer. That is what I'd truly like to be..." Is that like a "mini-meyers". Which is another way of saying is a mini-weiner. Which is another way to say his a little.........
Wow! I'm shocked!!!!
Who cares what these commie losers say...they don't live there...they're not starving...they're not sick...they're not homeless...they're not in this island prison...they are disgraceful supporting this mass murderer.
Well, if Noam Chomsky AND Ramsay Clark both say to lay off Cuba thats good enough for me. Too bad that Lee Harvey Oswald is not around to weigh in with his accessment of the situation.
Ya beat me by a minute and a half (with picture no less).
It is a real paradox, these liberal fools, that have no idea what American soverignty is, yet they stump for Cuban soverignty??? More liberal insanity.
