General Motors Corp. plans to bring back the Chevrolet Camaro as a production vehicle, a published report says.
GM chairman and chief executive officer Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the return of the muscle car in a speech Thursday at an automotive conference in Traverse City, Mich., the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday.
It could be built as early as 2008, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the plans. GM spokesman Christopher Preuss said yesterday that he couldn't comment on the report.
GM had won praise for its Camaro concept, which was unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The 2002 model year was the last for an earlier incarnation of the Camaro, which began its run with the 1967 model.
obviously someone spent a weekend or two on it...but it does nothing for me.
i can appreciate it but i dont care for it.
flame suit on
Fine with me. I'll be that ass. Course, all of the "experts" completely missed the shift to SUVs in the early 1980s, so I don't really trust the "experts" on either side of the argument. Make the car, see what the consumers say.
Last year Hershey Pa. Good Guys Hot Rod Show.
Re Retro:
Tag Along, Me Too Mustang..... I don't think GM will have the same success..
My brother had a '69 Camaro. He drove us to high school blaring CCR. Ahh, memories. Good times. Good car.
Wha chu talk 'bout Leonard ?
Therre was a full compliment of (4dr) compact Suvs by the late '80s (2dr compact & full size were on the scene before 'em)
I like it too. Along with the Challenger. They don't look like every other boring car out there.
Now if they price it right, and with the right drivetrain, I may buy one. If they price it like that XLR, well, that's just stupidity.
DCX is making a huge mistake by offering the Challenger as a low-volume, V8-only vehicle.
Oh SNAP!! That badboy has GOT to have a back seat fitting of a vette.
This is proof that, besides the Vette, GM has nada.
Kinda runs counter to the concept of retro "muscle car"
Only if they do a retro 2nd generation Camaro....with optional snorkel scoop and air shocks. ;-)
"Hershey Pa. Good Guys Hot Rod Show."
There's a joke in there somewhere.
:)
Have you seen both cars up front and personal?
follow my link in post 93 for more on that bad boy!
Can't they be designed on the inside with all the required safety features while maintaining the look of the original?
Read any history of the auto industry and you will find trucks/SUVs THE biggest surprise of the 1980s. Everyone expected a continued shift to small cars. Ruh roh.
That would be a good thing, but the air intake in the front doesn't appear to be designed for this.
I was in the "industry" at the time & it was mini vans 1st(Caravan), then compact SUVs (S Blazer).
What wasn't anticipated was the rapid switch to 4dr. CSUVs.
FWIW, back then, the planning horizon for a new model was 4+/- years.
