Reuters Doctoring Photos from Beirut? [photo inside]

OK, now things are getting weird.

This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation. Notice the repeating patterns in the smoke; this is almost certainly caused by using the Photoshop “clone” tool to add more smoke to the image. (Hat tip: Mike.)

It’s so incredibly obvious, it reminds me of the faked CBS memos. Smoke simply does not contain repeating symmetrical patterns like this, and you can see the repetition in both plumes of smoke. There’s really no question about it.

Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid on Beirut’s suburbs August 5, 2006. Many buildings were flattened during the attack. REUTERS/Adnan Hajj

The news services should adhere to National Geographic's standard. They require their photographers FedEx them the original memory cards. Photographers are not allowed to delete or alter any images.

The editors then scrutinize any questionable images to make sure that they could logically have occurred relative to the other images on the card.

Where is his right foot? His pants and leg seem a little too skinny compared to his left and his foot doesn't seem to exist because there is a rock in front of it which could have been added if the whole figure had been zapped into the scene.

ok, grab a small .jpg image off the internet
resize it to 1000% (not 1000x - I plead knackeredness, sorry) or 10x by the following process:
1. scale up to 250%
2. select your "despeckle" filter
3. select your mildest blur setting.
4. scale that up 400%
each of the original's pixels has now become a somewhat blurred square of 10 pixels by ten pixels, or 100 pixels total.

then, do your photomanipulation.
adjust the lighting and contrast to make the image look more grimy and dark and scary...
add your duplicated smoke... if the forger is not a moron, he'll do that in several "layers" at different transparency settings overlaid on the original background image...
check the work by scaling it down to 1/10 or 10% of the working size, to get an idea of the final look
when a satisfactory look is achieved, merge all layers.
then scale it back down thusly:
1. resize merged image to 50%
2. select blur filter
3. select median cut filter to uniformly dumb down the pixels
4. resize THAT to 20%
5. publish your forgery

Trouble with that is, it could be days or even weeks before news images could get published with rules like that.

National Geographic can afford to have restrictions like that given that they are a monthly publication with articles planned, written and illustrated months, if not years in advance.

An news organization would be pretty lame if they couldn't publish promptly...Especially in the internet age.

Besides, that would just give them longer to do their fakes better, so it would be more difficult for us pajamahadeen to catch them. It is the agenda than needs to be changed, not the technology and rules.

People just have to learn what can be done with digital imaging..

(and that ain't even touching what fractal scaling can let a slick forger pull off)

Knowing that technique, have you had a chance to examine the 'blue binky' picture? Same photographer, and there's been ongoing questions about how the kid could be so dirty while the binky is pristine.

Another suspicious one, the shadows don't seem right behind the fire. This one is by Ben Curtis...

Just a question: Why does anyone here even trust the MSM anymore, after their coverage of Hurricane Katrina that would've made William Randolph Hearst proud. After so many corrections on so many important newsstories, I can't believe that people run back to the Media for information(right here I am talking about Liberals, the ones who are usually blind to newspaper corrections, since they are so drive-by in access) and yet have all of their strange notions on President Bush. It is even stranger how much some Liberals are so brainwashed by our media.

I'll tell you, if there is a correction that comes up, you might have a few silent voices and the wake-me-up-when-Bush-commits-another-scandal crowd ignoring the correction. It is even worse that our biggest newspaper is a overtly partisan one, that tells people how bad America usually is, denied the Ukraine problem, buried the Holocaust, and endorsed Jimmy Carter and Mondale in the 80s.

The New York Times is the newspaper of record, a record of being on the wrong side of history. Sorry, just had to vent that out.

gotta be careful, here...
going by the power or telephone lines in the foreground, the 25JUL06 image was taken from one floor higher up with a concommitant slightly more severe angle than the 23JUL06 image... that can change what buildings are occluded by others.

The lighting and shading is the same, too.

If you google-ize Adnan Hajj and look at the images page, they're almost all sports photos. The dope sacrificed his career for easily-busted pictures.

Plus just from context, why would you be looking around like you're strolling across a parking lot instead of focusing on where to put your foot on the next step? That would be a good way to land on your keister!
