Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Survey shows broad evacuation from DC likely in terror attack

August 23, 2006 12:29 PM

DAVIS, W.Va.

A new West Virginia University survey shows that people who live in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, Maryland and Virginia are highly likely to flee a terrorist attack.

And the survey of 800 suburban Washington, DC residents shows many believe an attack is likely. WVU Assistant Professor Brian Gerber told public safety officials from around the region today that the vast majority plan to drive out of the area to locations all across the country.

West Virginia officials fear many would at least pass through the Eastern Panhandle -- clogging roads and stressing services. Gerber says the survey confirms that any exodus would be chaotic.

State Military Affairs and Public Safety Secretary James Spears says the survey underscores the need for regional planning. The Washington, DC-Baltimore area has six to seven million people and Spears says everyone needs to consider where they go if there is an attack.

Officials from federal agencies, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and several surrounding states are participating in the two-day conference at Canaan Valley Resort. Governor Manchin plans to speak later today.

I don't think this is a Palestinian group. It sounds more AQ-related.

I tend to agree. And, we know that al Qaida has been moving into the area over recent months/years.

Also, the fact that it took them over a week to make a statement gives the impression that they took them out of that area. I don't think they are being held any where near Gaza.

It does sound more like AQ.

I guess the one good thing is that they looked well on the video. I was already thinking the worst since they hadn't been heard from in such a long time.

12 ARRESTED IN US PLANE TURN BACK: DUTCH AGENCY
Yahoooo News via Reuters ^ | 8/23/06

Posted on 08/23/2006 9:47:09 AM PDT by areafiftyone

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police arrested 12 passengers on a U.S. Northwest Airlines plane bound for India which was forced to turn back to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, news agency ANP reported.

ANP quoted a police spokesman as saying 12 were arrested, but declined to give further details due to the ongoing investigation.

Police officials were not immediately available to comment.

The Dutch Defense Ministry said earlier the pilot decided to turn back after the crew said several of the 149 passengers on flight 42 to Mumbai were behaving suspiciously.

Security has been increased at airports worldwide in the last two weeks after British police said they had foiled a plot by British Muslims to blow up planes in the mid-Atlantic using liquid explosives disguised as drinks.

"Asian students' shock at ejection from jet by passenger mutiny"
11:17am 23rd August 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Manchester Umist students Sohail Ashraf and Khurram Zeb, both 22, said they sympathised with nervous travellers, but urged people not to be paranoid about Muslims.

"We might be Asian, but we're two ordinary lads who wanted a bit of fun," Mr Ashraf told the Daily Mirror.

"Just because we're Muslim does not mean we are suicide bombers."

The pair were marched off the jet at gunpoint after fellow passengers alerted officials on the flight back from Malaga, Spain."

Mysterious powder found at Bullhead City Post Office

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. A mysterious powder forced the evacuation and closure of the main post office in Bullhead City this afternoon.

A Bullhead City Fire Department spokesman says they received a call from postal officials reporting the discovery of a suspicious white powder discovered on the counter and an attendant's scale.

Hazardous materials crews took samples of the powder.

Initial tests show the powder tested positive for a high level of protein.

Today is a "Day of Reckoning"?On some Islamic websites, there is talk about a so-called day of reckoning

While no extra safeguards are in place, U.S. law enforcement are not ignoring the possible significance of Tuesday's date, August 22, a date that marks an important historic event on the Islamic calendar.

Internet websites have been full of speculation that it could be a target date for terrorists in commemoration of the return of the 12th imam, a supposed day of reckoning for Shiites.

August 22 was rumored by intelligence experts to be a possible date that the London plotters would blow-up passenger planes headed towards the United States, though it is not known if the suspects were Shiite extremists.

Over Half of TSA Screeners at One Airport Fail Screening Test

That's what they get when they push "sensitivity training" on the screeners instead of letting them go full-throttle to do their jobs vigorously and effectively, no matter whose baggage is being screened* and who looks like a potential terrorist.

*The fear of litigation costs to buck the ACLU/CAIR PC behavior standard may well exceed the estimated litigated value of passengers lost in a terrorist event

Airspace, Bridges and Waterway Restrictions in Effect for STS-115

PRESS RELEASE
Date Released: Wednesday, August 23, 2006
Source: NASA HQ

For the STS-115 launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, NASA managers are urging all aircraft pilots and boaters to fully comply with the airspace, bridges and waterway restrictions imposed around Kennedy Space Center prior to and during shuttle launches and landings.

"As always, we are coordinating with officials from the U.S. Air Force Eastern Range, Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard to help provide a safe launch environment for the shuttle crew and for interested spectators," said KSC Launch Director Mike Leinbach. "Violating these restrictions is not only unsafe for the astronauts and support crews, it's unsafe for the violator."

The first launch opportunity is Sunday, Aug. 27, with liftoff targeted for 4:30 p.m. EDT. This launch time is approximately in the middle of a 10-minute launch window. At NASA's request, Air Force and Coast Guard surveillance aircraft will patrol KSC's airspace boundaries on launch day. Violators will be intercepted by patrol forces, thoroughly investigated and subject to FAA enforcement action. A number of restrictions remain in effect around KSC during the hours immediately following the launch of a space shuttle. (snip)
