Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Killer bluetongue disease sets in

Snip: Bluetongue is harmless to people but can be fatal for ruminant animals, especially sheep, where it can kill up to 70% of an infected flock.

Tick borne disease puzzles researchers

Snip: The new pathogen, which causes rashes and flulike symptoms, has Storch and his fellow researchers on a mission.

"It's out there in nature, but no one knows where," said Robert Thach, one of the study's collaborators. "Why are people in St. Louis coming down with this disease? Where are they getting it? Where are the ticks getting it?"

The disease is considered an emerging infection, and too little is known about its causes to be classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a nationally reportable disease.

But the disease does have a name: Southern tick-associated rash illness.

Dog cancer is infectious

Snip: A strange form of cancer is being transmitted as an infectious agent among the world's dogs, without help from viruses or bacteria, a research team in England has found. The discovery, reported in the journal Cell, shows how a single cancer cell can become a successful parasite, grow and then spread worldwide in susceptible animals. The researchers said the disease is apparently transmitted sexually. It arose in wolves as much as 2,500 years ago, then spread to coyotes and dogs.

The new study is the first to document cancer being spread from animal to animal on its own. Viruses are known to cause some cancers when they damage critical genes during infection. But now it's clear cancer can get around solo, then spread through a population.

What this means for humans is not known, the researchers said, although it does suggest studies should be done on prostate and cervical cancer to see if they can spread the same way. The findings in dogs warn that in addition to viruses, bacteria, fungi and other parasites, cancer cells can act as infectious agents.

"The cancer escaped its original body and became a parasite" transmitted from dog to dog until it had colonized all over the world, explained Dr. Robin Weiss, head of the five-member research team at University College in London.

"Authorities Say Mideast Man Extorted Nude Images From Michigan Teen"
Tuesday, August 22, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — Charges have been filed against a man accused of persuading a teen to send him a nude photograph by threatening to ruin her parents' credit rating and saying he would come from the Middle East to have sex with her.

Babir Majid Chaudhry, a citizen of Pakistan who lives in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was arrested Thursday in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he had been visiting a brother, the Oakland County sheriff's department said Monday.

The Rochester Hills girl told investigators that a man contacted her online in March, when she was 15, producing financial information about her parents and threatening to destroy their credit rating if she didn't send him a nude photograph of herself.

After she sent the photograph, the sheriff's department said, the man told her he planned to come to the United States to have sex with her, The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press reported. The girl then went to police, and sheriff's investigators had been posing as her for recent online communications, The Oakland Press of Pontiac reported."

Terror Raid in Western New York

WGRZ.com ^ | Updated: 8/23/2006 7:06:52 AM | Lynne Dixon

The FBI says it's all part of an ongoing investigation into a group of Sri Lankans with terrorist plans. The FBI says there were no plans to attack Americans, but that the group, known as the "Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam" was targeting their home country of Sri Lanka. Officials say that terror group is responsible for assassinating a former prime minister of India.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force raided the Amherst home. Neighbors say three men were taken out in handcuffs. They say the task force also removed files, a computer and suitcases.

While it's not clear what role the three men arrested in Amherst allegedly played, the FBI says they've been watching the entire group, the Tamil Tigers, for years. The FBI's Leslie Wiser Jr. says the group was trying to purchase ten shoulder-fired surface to air missiles that can be used to bring down airplanes, and at least 500 A-K 47 assault weapons. According to Wiser, the terror group also asked for other sophisticated devises used in military operations.

Again, the FBI emphasizes there's no indication the weapons were to be used on U-S soil and it's still not clear what role the three men arrested in Amherst allegedly played.

I heard about this on Jerry Doyle's radio show last nite. Since CAIR was founded by and supported by Hizbollah sympathizers, Hizbollah now has the straight G2 on airport security ops. This is carrying PC to an assinine level.

Bomb threat forces bus search on I-10

Christopher Kline
azcentral.com
Aug. 23, 2006 06:40 AM

A Greyhound bus bomb threat closed parts of Interstate 10 west of Phoenix early Wednesday and forced a three-hour, full search of the California-bound vehicle, officials said.

The bus driver called 9-1-1 around midnight near Tonopah after one of the passengers allegedly overheard two others talking about detonating a bomb.

Crews from the Arizona Department of Public Safety evacuated the driver and 55 passengers from the bus while officers and a bomb-sniffing dog checked the vehicle and the luggage.

DPS officials didn’t find anything suspicious, and let the bus continue on its trip around 3 a.m.

Westbound lanes of the interstate were closed in the area for several hours.

DPS officers said the passenger who reported the possible threat had been asleep and "there may have been some misunderstanding what he heard."

I don't think Palestinian kidnappers have made such lofty demands in the past. They know we will not release all muslim prisoners in U.S. jails. This is so distressing. I don't think this is a Palestinian group. It sounds more AQ-related.
