Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Another Amnesty for Members of JI: Indonesia Continues to Offend Australia
By Zachary Abuza

Ten of the 33 individuals arrested in conjunction with the 12 October 2002 bombing on the resort island of Bali, Indonesia, had their sentences reduced as part of an annual national independence day amnesty (54,000 criminals had their sentences reduced). One, Puryanto, who was arrested for harboring some of the bombers, walked free as a result of his three month remission. Three of the Bali bombers, Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra remain on death row. Despite their previous pledges that they wanted to die as martyrs, they have all appealed their sentences. Their executions are schedueled to take place on or around 22 August. A fourth bomber, Ali Imron, received a life sentence.

The release has provoked outrage in Australia, which lost more than 80 of its nationals in the attack and whose embassy in Jakarta was bombed by members of Jemaah Islamiyah on 9 September 2004. Australia has provided significant technical, personnel, financial and educational assistance to Indonesia’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Pace Says Iran Fighting Proxy Wars Against Iraq, Israel

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq, Aug. 15, 2006 – Iran is fighting two proxy wars, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told servicemembers here Aug. 13.
Marine Gen. Peter Pace told servicemembers gathered at the camp chapel that Iran is “fighting a proxy war against Israel by supporting Hezbollah” in Lebanon. Iran also is fighting a proxy war against Iraq and the United States by supporting elements inside Iraq.

Pace said the preferred method of dealing with Iran is via diplomacy. The international community must place pressure on Iran to end its support of the Hezbollah terror group in southern Lebanon, he said.

Hezbollah launched raids across the Israeli-Lebanese border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers July 12. This sparked retaliation by Israel. A United Nations-brokered ceasefire went into effect yesterday. Iran is the principle national sponsor of Hezbollah.

In Iraq, officials believe Iran has trained many members of Shiite militia groups. There are also allegations that Iran is supplying the groups with weapons, including deadly shaped charges, and places to train and plan.

“There is a lot of diplomacy that may be used, a lot of international pressure that can be used, a lot of international dialogue that can be used with the Iranian government to let them know that we don’t appreciate what they are doing,” Pace said.

"Al Qaeda Terrorist Killed in Afghanistan; Extremists Die in Thwarted Attack"

American Forces Press Service

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON, Aug. 15, 2006 – Afghan and coalition forces killed an al Qaeda member and detained 13 other suspected terrorists today during an early-morning operation in Afghanistan’s Khowst province, U.S. military officials reported.
The operation’s aim was to capture a known al Qaeda facilitator considered a significant threat to Afghan and coalition forces. Intelligence linked the targeted terrorist to weapons and explosive smuggling, officials said.

The assault force first requested a peaceful surrender of people within the suspect’s hideout. Most inside immediately surrendered.

During a routine search of the compound’s buildings, a man disguised as a woman resisted capture and was shot and killed, officials said. Numerous detonators and other bomb-making materials were discovered during the operation. The material was later moved outside of the compound and destroyed. No Afghan or coalition forces were injured during the operation."

Iraqi Forces Capture Wanted Terrorists in Separate Baghdad Raids

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17, 2006 – Iraqi forces captured two wanted men in separate operations in and near Baghdad yesterday. Both operations were part of Operation Together Forward, the recent security crackdown in the Baghdad area.
One early morning operation led to the capture of a known terrorist cell leader in southern Baghdad. Iraqi security forces, assisted by coalition advisers, conducted a precision raid in the Rasheed district, capturing an individual known to be a former Baath Party member who now leads a terrorist cell in Baghdad’s Dora area. One other individual, a subordinate cell leader, also was detained during the raid.

In a separate early morning raid, Iraqi forces captured the leader of a terrorist cell that specialized in making improvised explosive devices.

Iraqi army forces conducted the raid as coalition force advisers looked on in the Abu Ghraib area of Baghdad and captured their primary target. Officials believe this cell leader has been active for the past several months. Four other individuals also were detained during the raid.

No Iraqi or coalition forces or civilians were injured in either operation, officials said.

In other news from Iraq, Iraqi army and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers discovered a large munitions cache during a cache sweep south of Baghdad around 8 p.m. Aug. 14.

Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and U.S. soldiers from Company B, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, discovered three 155 mm artillery rounds, 35 105 mm mortar rounds, two 60 mm mortar rounds, two rockets, and three small explosives.

In a separate event that day, Iraqi soldiers foiled a kidnapping attempt by terrorists in central Baghdad around 9:10 p.m.

Soldiers from 5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, stationed at a traffic control point observed a woman being forced into a car. The soldiers fired warning shots at the terrorists, who returned fire at the traffic control point, injuring one Iraqi citizen. The woman fled the scene during the exchange of fire. The injured Iraqi citizen was taken to a nearby hospital, and Iraqi soldiers escorted the woman back to her home.

European Command Takes Over Lebanon Mission

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17, 2006 – U.S. European Command will assume command of U.S. military forces operating off the coast of Lebanon and in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, the organization’s commander said here today.
Marine Gen. James L. Jones, speaking at a Pentagon news conference, said European Command elements will assume command of the operations in that area from U.S. Central Command Aug. 23.

European Command has supported U.S. Central Command in the effort. Central Command originally received the mission because Lebanon is in that organization’s assigned area of operations. But Central Command also is responsible for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. This change will allow Central Command assets to go to other duties.

Israel is in European Command’s area of operations, and the command will need to work closely with European nations as events unfurl. “We will be working with the U.S. Central Command and, by the end of the month, we will effect the handover of responsibility,” Jones said.

Military forces in the region are assuring the evacuation of American citizens and, if need be, the U.S. embassy. They also are assisting in humanitarian activities. “Beyond that, we have no additional instructions,” Jones said.

Jones also announced today that Navy Vice Adm. John Stufflebeem, commander of U.S. 6th Fleet, has been named as the joint task force commander. He replaces Vice Adm. Pat Walsh, 5th Fleet commander.

To date, 14,876 Americans have evacuated Lebanon. “All things are proceeding normally, and we await further developments and further mission taskings as they might come down,” Jones said.

Azerbaijan: A hot-spot getting hotter
- serious security concerns; Religion Law being amended - please pray.

By Elizabeth Kendal
World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission (WEA RLC)
Special to ASSIST News Service

AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- Azerbaijan is a religious fault-line country. Northern Azerbaijan borders Chechnya and Dagestan and is largely Sunni Muslim. Southern Azerbaijan borders Iran and is mostly Shia. To the west Azerbaijan borders the Christian nations of Armenia (its traditional 'enemy') and Georgia. To the east is the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan's population of nearly 8 million is 83 percent Muslim and around 4.6 percent Christian, most of whom are Armenian or Russian. Due to a history of war and occupation Azerbaijanis tend to view Christianity as the religion of the Russian and Armenian 'enemy'.

There is growing sectarian tension between the Muslim 30 percent minority Sunnis and the 70 percent majority Shiites who are however not pro-Iranian. They are Turkic Azeri Shiites who mostly appreciate the secular nature of their government and look to Turkey, Israel and the West. Their mosques are visited primarily by the older generation. The Sunnis though are mostly from ethnic minorities. They are embracing the extreme fundamentalist Wahhabi Islam from Saudi Arabia to counterbalance Azeri Shiite domination and Iranian influence.

Wahhabi Islam has only infiltrated Azerbaijan in the past decade through migration of mostly Wahhabi Chechen and Dagestani Muslims as well as the Russian military's push of thousands of Chechen rebels and militants into Azerbaijan during the second Chechen war. However, the current Wahhabi advancement is due to the vast number of highly active Wahhabi missionaries from the Arab Gulf states. Flush with oil funds they are building mosques and distributing Wahhabi literature and propaganda, as well as training and funding local Wahhabi activists.
Wahhabis control at least 150 of the northern Sunni mosques which attract mostly the younger generation. Of these the Abu Bakr mosque in the capital Baku is the largest mosque in Azerbaijan. Whilst Azerbaijan's mosques mostly attract around 300 to Friday prayers, the Abu Bakr mosque typically has 5000 to 7000 worshippers. The Wahhabi Sunnis are becoming more and more politically active, threatening the government and the Shiites whom they regard as heretics. The most radical and militant Sunnis tend to meet in cells in homes. The threat of domestic terrorism looms large. The risk of Iranian intervention is also real. Around 20 million ethnic Azeris live in Iran, more than double Azerbaijan's population. Iran's Supreme Leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is an ethnic Azeri. The theocrats in Iran who view the Wahhabi as their inveterate enemy would be keen to crush any Wahhabist threat in oil-rich Azerbaijan.

So Azerbaijan is in danger of domestic terrorism directed at the government and across sectarian lines, incited by mostly foreign or foreign-backed Sunni and Shia missionaries and activists. Meanwhile, Forum 18 reports amendments to Azerbaijan's already repressive Religion Law aimed at clamping down on 'destructive sects' will be debated in the parliamentary sitting commencing in September. When Christians are already viewed with contempt and suspicion - particularly the small non-Orthodox minority, a number of whom are Azeri converts from Islam - it is difficult to imagine they could avoid becoming victims of Azerbaijan's genuine security concerns.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY FOR GOD TO:

open the eyes of the parliament and its advisors to the non-political, non-threatening, peaceful nature of Christian worship and fellowship.
grant the government the insight and courage to disregard political correctness and historical bias to justly differentiate between the evident Islamist threat and the peaceful exercise of Christianity, praying particularly for Ms Rabiyyat Aslanova, chairing the working group drafting the amendments to the Religion Law, and for President Ilhan Aliyev.
bless Azerbaijan's churches with great spiritual wisdom and grace, and especially with divine brotherly love and spiritual solidarity that dissolves denominational and ethnic barriers, which is beautiful to see. 'My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.' (John 15:12 NIV)

This is all very odd. Why would someone try to get on a plane with explosive liquid now?

People dumb enough to blow themselves up might be too dumb to change their plans once set in motion...

Or...

It could be that Iran or Syria is just trying to blackmail us- the anthrax looked like an effort to blackmail us into inaction back in 2001.

Since they are being so obvious, even now after being exposed, and since these dry runs aren't always "dry" - it does seem like a warning shot across our bow. It this case it's like saying "See, we have an unlimited number of operatives, even women with children, who are willing to die to kill your people and ruin your economy... your resources are too limited to catch them all before some succeed, so back off."

They still think we're weak-willed thanks to the donks.

Bit of an update:

MISSILE-OBJECT OVER HAWAII

The FBI and the Transportation Security Administration are investigating sightings of an object resembling a missile flying over the Hilo Airport area Tuesday morning, Hawaii County Civil Defense said. Reports gave opposite descriptions of its direction and widely varying estimates of its size. The largest estimate was about 12 feet long, and the smallest was one foot. One report said it was headed over the airport's main runway, but another said it was headed north from Hilo, away from the airport. - Star Bulletin

I've been obsessed with this story since it broke. You make a good point about both incidents involving women (with Pakistani connections). I think they are using women as accomplices. I know coincidences happen but I find it incredibly hard to believe that these 2 incidents over the past 2 days were nothing more than a so-called "moonbat" with a panic attack and an innocent woman who was racially profiled.

Actually, I was more concerned with the Logan flight.
One of the links Cindy pointed out above states that on the 'same' flight as Cathy Mayo - one or two additional women were being referred to immigration. (If I'm reading that correctly)
