SHANGHAI, China -- Shanghai has constructed a massive underground bunker complex capable of sheltering 200,000 people from a nuclear attack, a local newspaper reported.

The million-square-foot complex connects to shopping centers, office buildings, apartment buildings and the subway system via miles of tunnels, the Shanghai Morning Post said in an exclusive report.

The newspaper said the complex has water, electricity, lighting, ventilation and protective doors, and can support life for as long as two weeks.

The Saturday report didn't say when the complex was finished or whether it was built with any specific threats in mind.

200,000 is 1.1% of Shanghai's population (17,420,000). I guess you have to be "more equal" than the rest in order to get a spot in the bunker.

That should allow room for the very top echelon of the Communist Party, that's about it.

Wait until the general population figures out where it is in the event of an immanent attack. It will be like a bad zombie movie.

We do have a basic functioning missile defense shield. Let them dig holes, we will simply rule the skies. One more thank you to President Reagan. What a visionary.

We tried an above-ground version of this last year. We called the "Super Dome."

It didn't work.

Takes care of 200k people for two weeks? That's roughly 16 screenings of "On The Beach."

That's a lot of work and effort. Why did they build this?

Shanghai has constructed a massive underground bunker complex capable of sheltering 200,000...

That's nothing.....I have several rental houses that could hold at least that many Mexicans...

That bunker is just for shelter against Typhoons.

Remember the Olympics of 1938.

China has the Olympics in 2008. Who will be America's Jesse Owens over in the Middle Kingdom?

Also, india and russia have nuclear weapons. if the muslims in the west start to push for independence, then iran and even pakistan could align against it.

I guess the 200,000+ CP bigshots and their families who hole up in the bunker in the event of a thermonuclear exchange will be really surprised to learn that Shanghai's radioactive contamination will last quite a bit longer than two weeks.

There should still be underground bunkers. The missile shield could get overwhelmed, sabotaged (even from things such as computer virae), etc.

I've over the last few years that war is part of the Chinese agenda for world domination. However, this bomb shelter may be about Taiwan getting ready to test fire an ICBM. Here's a link I posted the other day which details the current U.S. dominance in nuclear arms:

China is closer to regional rule, but is still far from global control. Also, doesn't russia have more nuclear bombs than the United States? (or are they deteriorated?).
