Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
Hollywood will forgive Mel.
Right on, MikeA.
Of course, we must also take care to separate the man from his achievements. Though I find his recent comments about Jews deeply offensive, I do still think Braveheart kicks a$$.
I can't wait to read the movie review in Mel-Jazeera.
This new movie is actually Mel's apology to Hollywood for making The Passion of the Christ.
What is Mel...some sort of double agent?
As the old saying goes, Mel "needs a check-up from the neck-up." My God, he's nuts.
Trey and Matt had him pegged in that South Park episode.
LOL
Once again "It's Bush's fault"
He made 4 movies with Danny Glover....
True, Glover's swamp fever left wing braindead politics is so toxic it's probably catching.
You can be gay, racist, anti-Catholic, anti-Christian, mysoginist, a drunk, a drug dealer, a child-molester, guilty of manslaughter - Hollywood will forgive all this and there are actors working today who fall into these categories. The one thing you cannot be or seem to be in Hollywood is anti-semetic. That is not forgivable.
IMO, he's a nut, and an alcoholic one at that. I still say he said nothing to the cops that I don't hear on the Today Show about Jews and Israel, aside from the F-bombs.
Maybe so, but it's perfectly ok to be anti-zionist and anti-neocon, and those are just about the same thing. I suppose it's like the n-word. It's ok (to them) to keep blacks on the plantation, to treat them like idiot children, to keep them on welfare, but by God nobody better use THAT WORD.
Of course, this rule does not apply to muzzies.
I'm with you. Although I've liked many of his movies it's becoming apparent the guy is just a tad unbalanced.
Mel has made an ass of himself with his drunkeness. He has stumbled greatly. He needs help. Pray for him.
Ever see "Conspiracy Theory"? Funny film, and probably somewhat representative of Mel's true self.
I admire and thank Mel for bringing "Passion" to the screen. (But when he's drunk I wouldn't pay much to what he says just like I wouldn't any other drunk in the world.)
"The one thing you cannot be or seem to be in Hollywood is anti-semetic."
Hollywood doesn't like it if you're anti-semitic, either.
