Four men accused of using the Internet to solicit sex from minors were arrested during a two-week undercover operation by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office. Arrested in July were: 25-year-old William Noel Shrum of The Woodlands; 26-year-old Guadalupe ``Wally'' DeLaGarza the third of College Station; 40-year-old Robert Wayne Ramirez of Needville; and 51-year-old Calvin Hoddy Hannah Junior of Owasso, Oklahoma. That's what the A-G's office announced in a news release Tuesday. All four were lured to Shenandoah, Texas, by investigators in the A-G's office who posed as minors on the Internet. De La Garza allegedly engaged in sexual conversations on Myspace-dot-com with an undercover investigator he thought was a 14-year-old girl. The news release says he was arrested for attempted sexual assault of a minor and the unlawful carrying of a weapon after arriving in Shenandoah with condoms, a digital camera, rope restraints and a handgun. Shrum, Ramirez and Hannah were all arrested for attempted sexual assault of a child and online solicitation of a minor. Hannah drove 480 miles from Owasso to Shenandoah for the meeting
Six months. Their attorney said he should be out before Christmas, but the mom says she no longer believes anything anyone connected to the judicial system says. I believe that six months puts him out just in time to begin his semester of his sophomore year in college. Plus they are hoping that he will be allowed to tutor fellow inmates for their GED. My concern is that that could set him up as a target because of his intelligence and "advantages."

Poor innocent young man. Of course, they are all innocent. Just ask them.

Yes, I do, but that's not a fair comparison. And it IS an injustice.
Even he would say that he was not innocent of morality. He did something he shouldn't have. He talked dirty online to kids who he thought were his age. Then went to meet them. He thought they would be having some kind of a sexual experience together, but the fact that he made plans for later on in the evening with friends is evidence that he did not plan on participating. Stupid, immoral. But not worthy of six months in jail.

We've heard one side of the story, a judge and jury heard both sides and made a decision.
Twigs....I have a daughter the same age as Jessica, and when she gets into scrapes, I have to remind myself that those are her life's lessons. And even though they are not what I want her to go thru, sometimes they are necessary for her to have a clearer view of the world. Like your friends son, my daughter is very intelligent, but that has nothing to do with common sense abilities.
What I am trying to tell you, is that that young man will be out before Christmas, and he will remember what he saw there and I suspect that he will appreciate his family more, and be a whole lot wiser.

Remember that this isn't really a ripe area for police abusing their powers. It's not like they are out ticketing jaywalkers while someone is getting mugged in the next alley. In this case the police are in the alley, luring the muggers to them. Others will get caught in the trap as well but they are collateral damage. That's unfortunate, but seems acceptable when looking at the perps who got caught here.
Prevention is the new nostrum.
I really do believe that if he is willing, he can make this a strength in his life. I've ordered the autobiographies of Charles Colson and Corrie Ten Boom for his mom. Both of them suffered injust jail sentences, but soared later because of it. They were foundational reading for me when I was his age. I have a daughter who is 21, so this hits close to home.
There was a problem with how evidence was handled. I don't remember the details, but I think the police lied to get their victims. A separate trial was held for that, but again, I don't know the details. The police alluring others to them is the problem. And I believe it's a big problem. They should be protecting our children and the internet, but "collateral damage" as you call it could become an enormous problem.
This AG sting operation has been ongoing for a while now and has made I think something just less than 100 arrest. I was watching a video report about it on TXCN last night but don't remember the exact details.
It could, but it sounds like your friend's problem might have been poor legal representation. Did his mom hire a real lawyer?
We both have daughters close in age, and we both know what they are up against in today's society. It is scary.
Yes, they did. I don't know about his competence, but they certainly didn't think that the problem was with him. I haven't discussed that with them recently, though.
Six months is nothing. He can do that standing on his head.
The real punishment comes when he is released and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Every employer these days does a background check. So do most landlords and many universities. Short of getting pardoned by the Governor, this is going to stay with him forever.
