hmm is that uncut or just photocopies of bills with overlapping borders?
Uncut bills do not overlap each other like that.
thoughts? some banks and institutions overseas DO photocopy bills for their own records to try to keep up with who is passing them fakes, esp. with 100's.. i have seen this firsthand in panama.
many freepers ever see uncut currency that overlaps like this?
bingo, these are possibly photocopies of individual (large) client deposits of 100's which the bank would use as recourse if some of the bills turn out to be fakes.
sure they should, outside the US i have seen banks and businesses do this when a client passes large bills to have a record and recourse if any of the bills are fakes.
folks need to look closely at the picture. these aren't uncut currency sheets.
This isn't counterfeiting, you morons! Whenever somebody goes into this bank with a $100US bill, the bank scans the image so it can trace the bill if it turns out to be counterfeit. That's why only the lower half of the bill, with the serial number, appears. This is a standard anti-fraud operation.
I guess Mr.Engel thinks that HizzBollah is an auxiliary of The United States Treasury?
totally possible some media outlets will actually cover this too.
i have had this sort of thing done to me personally in panama. at one point a few years ago merchants didn't want NEW style 100's because of some very decent fakes that apparently came out of colombia.
You may very well be right. My ignorance may have caused me to jump the gun on that one.
Banks keep track of what bills they receive in order to prevent fraud (which will be caught and which will, when caught, leave them liable). This isn't fraud.
Not that I don't appreciate the moron sobriquet but I wasn't one who claimed counterfeiting.
The sheets probably came from North Korea. Probably packing materials for rockets.
You're actually not a moron, and that comment wasn't directed at you.
Photocopies of every $100 that's gone through the bank's hands, so the bank can protect itself if it becomes a target of counterfeiters. This is standard stuff in banks the world over. They're making a run on tin foil tonight on FR!
bttt
Okay. I probably shouldn't have reacted. Peace.
Is this the standard photocopy method that banks use and if so, why? Thanks
LOL! That was in the "Situation Room" threads during the initial invasion of Iraq. Engel provided more laughs than any other reporter...for which he earned the sobriquet, "Pretty Chicken". Good memories.
Fact is, though that may not be counterfeiting, we do know that N.K. and Iran are producing counterfeit US money.
No argument with that. But if I were jumping on the MSMers for missing the obvious then I'd want to be sure what is obvious.
I don't think there is a single standard photocopy method although there could be several standards that I'm not aware of. Any banking technology experts here? It looks like they were trying most of all to capture the serial number and demonination on that image, in order to determine patterns in counterfeit species.
"Probably misprints and/or test sheets which is why they were left. Clearly, they didn't get those sheets from the US Mint. Why would they be copying/printing American $100 bills if not for some nefarious purpose?"
Agree completely. Even circumstantially, with heavy benefit of the doubt, why would you find such a thing in such a place?
Isn't even a question the press wants to bring up? Or the White House maybe? Just a casual aside from Tony Snow,
" . . . and we'd like to thank MSNBC publicly for the footage of the uncut sheets of what appear to be counterfeit $100 bills. We are requesting samples be collected for examination by US Secret Service to be detailed to the IDF as consultants to examine what was collected there at Qana . .."
