Ancient prayerbook found in Irish bog

IRELAND'S national museum today hailed what it said was one of the most significant discoveries in decades - and perhaps centuries - after an ancient prayer book was found by chance in an Irish bog.

The National Museum of Ireland said fragments of what appeared to be an ancient Psalter or Book of Psalms, written around AD 800, were uncovered by a bulldozer in a bog in the south Midlands.

"In discovery terms this Irish equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls is being hailed by the Museum's experts as the greatest find ever from a European bog," the museum said in a statement.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, found in the mid 20th century, are considered to be of enormous religious and historical significance since they include some of the earliest known surviving Biblical documents.

The Irish discovery, recovered from bogland last Friday, comprises extensive fragments of what is thought to be an Irish Early Christian Psalter, written on vellum, a fine animal skin parchment.

"In my wildest hopes, I could only have dreamed of a discovery as fragile and rare as this," Museum Director Pat Wallace said, adding it was not so much the fragments themselves, but what they represented, that was of such "staggering" importance.

"It testifies to the incredible richness of the Early Christian civilisation of this island and to the greatness of ancient Ireland," he said.

The museum said it did not know how the manuscript ended up in the bog.

"It may have been lost in transit or dumped after a raid, possibly more than a thousand to twelve hundred years ago."

Part of Psalm 83, a lament to God over other nations' attempts to wipe out Israel, is legible but the museum said the extent to which other Psalms or additional texts are preserved would only be determined by lengthy work by a team of experts.

Bernard Meehan, Head of Manuscripts at Trinity College Dublin, who was invited to advise on the context and background of the manuscript, said he believed it was the first discovery of an Irish Early Medieval manuscript in two centuries.

Initial impressions placed the composition date of the manuscript at about AD 800, a time of Viking raids in Ireland.

And a further ping to this timely story...

From Associated Press

The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.

And a picture of the book as it was found:

"It may have been lost in transit..."

Quite understandable. There's many a time I dropped my Bible on the way home from the Pub! :0)

there wasn't much "new" information in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Well, there was a bunch of information on the group that hid them.."Essenes"?

Oh, there definately was some "new" stuff --- the the confirmation of the "old" stuff was probably the most important:

Gebal is the Hebrew name for the ancient city in Lebanon that was also known by the Greek name Byblos, and which, from the papyrus produced there, gave its name to the Holy Bible.

In Arabic, the same city is called Jbail.

Which Israel invaded this week.

Things don't change much in that part of the world, even after 2500 years.

I don't believe it. No way a piece of parchment paper survived 1000 plus years buried in a bog. I think this will ultimately turn out to be a fake!

Actually, it seems that Palladius preceded Patrick,

To be sure, he (Patrick) was not the first regular missionary to the island. He had been preceded by a certain Palladius, who had entered upon the mission under the sanction of the Roman bishop Celestine. Little, however, is known of the work of Palladius. The results of his labors were probably not great, and the honor of founding the Irish Church may well be accorded to his successor...

Regarding the 'Catholic' influence,...the relations of the early Irish Church with the Roman see do not appear to have been very intimate; for we find the Irish, like the Briton across the channel, cherishing non-Roman customs ( in a footnote it is observed that in all the correspondance of Leo the Great, who was a contemporary of Patrick, there is no mention of Ireland. He adds (W.D.Killen) 'it is acknowledged that for one hundred and fifty years after the death of Leo, the church of Ireland continued to be in a very flourishing condition; and yet there is not a shadow of evidence that meanwhile any bishop of Rome addressed to any of its ministers so much as a single line of advice, warning or commendation (History of the Christian Church, Henry C. Sheldon, Vol1, The Early Church, pg 407,409).

Philip Schaff states

The Roman mission of Palladius failed; the independent mission of Patrick succeeded....The church-history of Ireland is peculiar. It began with an independent catholicity (or a sort of semi-Protestantism) and ended with Romanism,....Lying outside of the bounds of the Roman empire and never invaded by Roman legions, that virgin island was Christianized without bloodshed and independently of Rome and the canon of the ecumenical synods....After the Norman conquest, it became closely allied to Rome....The first traces of Irish Christianity are found at the end of the fourth or the beginning of the fifth century (History of the Christian Church, Vol.4, pg.43-47)

The more apropos chapter is listed below.
Putin has sold nukes to the muslims to boost his nations fallen dreams and show the world that they still matter. He miscalculated and now he's got to cover up his evil deeds. Somebodies going to use one of Putin's weapons very soon and then he's got to cover it up. That is the hook in the jaw which forces Russia to attack Israel.

YECHEZCHIAL
(Book of Ezekiel)
Chapter 38

Yechezchial 37

1
And the word of HaShem came unto me, saying:
2
'Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3
and say: Thus saith the L-rd GOD: Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal;
4
and I will turn thee about, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed most gorgeously, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords:
5
Persia, Cush, and Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet;
6
Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah in the uttermost parts of the north, and all his bands; even many peoples with thee.
7
Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou guarded of them.
8
After many days thou shalt be mustered for service, in the latter years thou shalt come against the land that is brought back from the sword, that is gathered out of many peoples, against the mountains of Israel, which have been a continual waste; but it is brought forth out of the peoples, and they dwell safely all of them.
9
And thou shalt ascend, thou shalt come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many peoples with thee.
10
Thus saith the L-rd GOD: It shall come to pass in that day, that things shall come into thy mind, and thou shalt devise an evil device;
11
and thou shalt say: I will go up against the land of unwalled villages; I will come upon them that are at quiet, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates;
12
to take the spoil and to take the prey; to turn thy hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and against the people that are gathered out of the nations, that have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the middle of the earth.
13
Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the magnates thereof, shall say unto thee: Comest thou to take the spoil? hast thou assembled thy company to take the prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take great spoil?

14
Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say unto Gog: Thus saith the L-rd GOD: In that day when My people Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15
And thou shalt come from thy place out of the uttermost parts of the north, thou, and many peoples with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company and a mighty army;
16
and thou shalt come up against My people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the end of days, and I will bring thee against My land, that the nations may know Me, when I shall be sanctified through thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17
Thus saith the L-rd GOD: Art thou he of whom I spoke in old time by My servants the prophets of Israel, that prophesied in those days for many years, that I would bring thee against them?
18
And it shall come to pass in that day, when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the L-rd GOD, that My fury shall arise up in My nostrils.
19
For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath have I spoken: Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20
so that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep upon the ground, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at My presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21
And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the L-rd GOD; every man's sword shall be against his brother.
22
And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will cause to rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many peoples that are with him, an overflowing shower, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23
Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself, and I will make Myself known in the eyes of many nations; and they shall know that I am HaShem.

May I?

Is "it" possibly that the stone has allegedly been over turned twice-from England to Scotland, and back again? or thrice-from it's origin to England to Scotland and back again?

and/or,

are the two daughters England and America?

The first bishop of the Church of England in the United States (The Episcopal Church) would not swear allegiance to the King and as a result he was consecrated in Scotland.

What has happened and is happening in and to the mitre and crown with the Episcopal Church, the Church of England, parts of the worldwide Anglican Communion fits both your definitions of the word overturn.

"31 thus saith the L-rd GOD: The mitre shall be removed, and the crown taken off; this shall be no more the same: that which is low shall be exalted, and that which is high abased. 32 A ruin, a ruin, a ruin, will I make it; this also shall be no more, until he come whose right it is, and I will give it him."

I do not believe the two (actually I think there were three) daughters represent England or America as they were from the tribe of Judah, the king line. The House of Israel were the 10 tribes sometimes referenced as Ephraim the largest of the 10 tribes, or Israel, or House of Israel.

These are the "lost sheep" that Christ gave his first instruction to go to first. Matthew 10:5- rest of chapter.

I never could pin down the Jeremiah in Ireland theories, and the lost tribe theories that spring from them. Too much speculation in it all, and usually not far under the surface is an anti-semetic replacement theology.

Easier just to look at the world stage and see who hates whom. The Muslims seem to have an ingrained, instinctive hatred toward Israel and America. These are the two nations formed out of a gathering out of the nations. A gathering of Judah and a gathering of Gentiles - along with the largest concentration of diaspora Jews.

Joseph the patriarch was left for dead, and was thought to be dead, yet ultimately reappeared to his brothers and father as the vizier of Egypt - the chief administrator in the superpower of the day. This was for the purpose of saving his entire family.

I don't think all that much has changed, except that so much time has passed that even Joseph doesn't realize who he is. It'll be sorted out soon enough. Joseph is yet alive. And when this is revealed, the spirit of his father (Israel) will be revived.

There is a belief in Judaism that the House of Joseph must be the one to vanquish the forces of Esav. The ultimate war on terror, as it were. Imagine the abject horror on Jihadist faces when told, "Those Joos are but one tribe (plus Levi and Benjamin)... but America the Great Satan (and even those crazy Brits) comprises the other ten. Have a nice day."

I should have added that Esav is equated with Rome and by extention... Christianity. This may be a complimentary view (to what I wrote above) in that the Erev Rav (mixed multitude) will by nature side with their spiritual brothers (Muslims), in an attempt to destroy the whole House of Israel.

There are probably some parallels to the Herods, who were Idumaeans.
