Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's image and job rating appear to be rebounding with voters, according to a new poll released Tuesday that shows the Republican governor leading Democratic state Treasurer Phil Angelides by 8 percentage points.
The Field Poll found 45 percent of likely voters surveyed favored Schwarzenegger, with 37 percent backing Angelides.
Nearly half the 731 likely voters surveyed approved of Schwarzenegger's job performance, the first time since February 2005 that more voters approved than disapproved of the job he is doing, the Field Poll found.
And for the first time since September 2004, more voters rated as positive the direction the state is heading than said it was negative.
The campaign this year has been a referendum on Schwarzenegger, the Field Poll found, with two-thirds of Angelides backers saying their support is a vote against the governor rather than an endorsement of his Democratic challenger.
Some Republicans have criticized Schwarzenegger as too liberal, but the poll found he nonetheless enjoys support from 85 percent of those voters who called themselves Republicans. Sixty-three percent of Democrats said they support Angelides after a bruising primary fight with state Controller Steve Westly.

There is a recent Zogby poll, which shows Angelides ahead with 44 to Arnold's 42, but within the margin of error.

Another encouraging sign is that Republicans are uniting in their support of Arnold. Now everyone just needs to get out and vote.
The numbers in this survey are even better for Aaaahnold when one subtracts the Field Poll's lefty fudge factor.
You can be sure the unions will be mobilizing dem voters.
Every single vote is crucial.
FO, no need to go to that website. All ya gotta do is read the article you posted in this thread:
Another poll released Monday found the candidates about even. The Zogby poll found 44 percent support for Angelides and 42 percent for Schwarzenegger, but it was within the poll's sampling error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. That survey was conducted from July 11-19.Angelides' media consultant, Bill Carrick, noted that Schwarzenegger has spent more than 10 times as much on advertising as his rival since the June primary election - $15 million for Schwarzenegger compared with $1.4 million for Angelides.
Field is an awful poll, yet year after year the press continue to quote them, yet their early polls very seldom have any correlation to the outcome. As for "likely voters" those are self-screened likely voters, so it doesn't hold much weight.
If you want to dig further find out about their sampling. What percentage of the calls went to San Francisco County? vs. Placer County. Field sample based on the populations of counties, rather than the percentage of people statewide who are likely to vote from that county.
Yes, but from that website you can go to the WSJ website, even if you are not a subscriber and look at all the BattleGround State polls for both Senate and Gov races. Sometimes you can go direct, but sometimes when you try it, you have to log in and those who aren't subcribing to WSJ may not be able to see it, but when it's referred by another site, it works.
I didn't go and test it, but you can definitely get to it via the link I posted.
Here is the direct link to the WSJ, if anyone wants to try it, it may work -- if not, go via that other link I posted.

Good news for Kalif conservatives!
(/sarc)
Who's getting your vote for Gov, Dan?
Why the sarcasm tag, do you think that Angelides being elected would be better for conservatives???
I think that the more likely reason is that voters are uncomfortable with Phil Angelides for governor. Much like the choices California voters got in the special recall election, when you weigh the choices, Arnold is the least offensive candidate.
I would have expected Arnold to be doing better.
It's going to be a very tight race.
What really hurt Arnold is that he put those conservative propositions on the ballot and called the special election, where he took on the unions, tried to curtail spending, get a fair redistricting -- all of which would have been devastating for the Dems. So the unions really came out and trashed Arnold, they were running anti-Arnold ads 24/7 about every 5 minutes.
What is remarkable, is that given that, Arnold is doing as well as he is. If it hadn't been him using his political capital to pass conservative propositions, he would be sailing to an easy reelection.
Most conservatives finally did figure this out, that's why he has 85% of the Republicans supporting him -- at least according to the poll. I hope the other 15% and third party voters will realize the devastation Angelides would call and get out and vote for Arnold.
... and Tom.
As an appointed State Party Member I am required to publicly support all the Republican nominees. Unfortunately those who gain membership by virtue of their elected official status are not bound by that rule (some pigs are more equal than others). So Dick Mountjoy and I must support the nominees, but they all don't have to support Dick, a lifelong GOP warrior who has spent many years in the trenches, and the dully nominated mainstream Republican candidate for US Senate.
Kinda stinks, doesn't it?
Including on FR?
Californian's do seem to have short memories. They are also distracted by small shiny objects.
Arnold will win the election (as long as he doesn't do anything to rile the unions) because Califonian's want to vote for Arnold's Hollywood smile.
dung.
P.S. I do enjoy they way Arnold's campaign is using Steve Westly's mud from the primaries to attack Angelides. The slug line on the new commercials? "What if Steve Westly was right?!?!?"
"As an appointed State Party Member I am required to publicly support all the Republican nominees."

Well, you may want to preview your posts more carefully -- your support of Republican candidates doesn't come across very well in many of them.
And if you are supporting Republican candidates with such reluctance, maybe you should resign your membership.
I voted for all the propositions he sponsored. I think the main problem is that he put them on the ballot, and then endured months of negative ads from the unions without adequately responding to them.
The party rules specify support for nominated candidates, not knee-jerk blind allegiance to radical policy shifts. There's a big difference between publicly supporting a candidacy and speaking out on a candidate's governing style and campaign strategy.
First and foremost I support the party platform. When I speak out and criticize it is against people who fly in the face of everything we stand for as Republicans. I'm not the one out of touch with the Party.
For the record I'm supporting all the nominees. I wish I could say the same for Arnold. Maybe the one who refuses to endorse our US Senate nominee is the one who should resign.
