IDF says army leveling 1km of territory inside south Lebanon

A senior Israel Defense Forces officer told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that IDF troops had leveled land inside Lebanese territory extending up to one kilometer from Israel's northern frontier.

The objective is to prevent the reestablishment of Hezbollah guerilla posts along Israel's border.

Earlier Monday, Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that Israel intends to create an unmanned buffer zone in south Lebanon, from where Hezbollah has been pounding Israel with rockets for the past six days.

"One of the aims of the [military] operation is to establish a security area in Lebanon, without the presence of IDF soldiers," Peretz said.

IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz told the committee that Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has been in an underground bunker since the start of Israeli air strikes targeting the group's stronghold in Beirut.

"Sheikh Nasrallah is hiding in a bunker in Beirut beneath the ruins of the of the Shi'ite neighborhood. He and his aides have not seen sunlight since the start of Israel Air Force strikes last Thursday," he said.

Can't the land simply be flattened again and outposts remade?

Odd isn't it that the terrorist rats always hide in their rat holes when the going gets tough.

These people are truly mental midgets.

For all of Osama binLadens millions he has the accommodations of early Neanderthals.

This speaks volumes for Islam, the people of the Middle East and their Arab leaders.

I say tell all civilians to get out of the lower 50mi of Lebanon...and then use a number of battlefield neutron weapons to kill everything that lives in that 50mi band. Shake and repeat as necessary.

The consequence of doing that, would be what? do you suppose.

Wow, a one kilometer band 40 miles long leveled!!! In one week!!! (I'll bet it didn't cost them a zillion dollars, either.)

And we can't foresee completing a fence along our southern border for 10 or 20 years.

If we were half as industrious as the Israelis, we'd have a totally inpenetrable border with Mexico within a year.

I don't see how Hezbollah can be kept out without Israeli troops having a presence on both sides of the border fence. Nature abhors a vacuum and if Israel isn't going to fill it, rest assured a hostile force will. The Lebanese army is certainly not up to the task of securing the border area. So its not enough to create a buffer zone. You have to patrol it from Day One to keep intruders out.

They must be waiting for the Lebanese army. Do you suppose it is made up of barbers and hairdressers like the Belgian army is?

I suppose they could patrol it by air. Announce it is a "no man zone" and anything found within the zone is subject to being bombed or shot, then patrol by air.

Also, I would presume they have access to some of the same technology we have, they can seed the area with sensor that would pick up people moving around.

Then if they find anyone in the zone, drop a bomb on them.

Would it be 100%? Who knows, but would you really want to travel across open territory knowing that your movements can be picked up, and a bombed dropped on you the minute you are detected?

"Shake and repeat as necessary"
To clean up an area 50x80km you'd need some 50+ neutron bombs for each repetition. N-things are small by design.
