Without Saddamn Israel is laying down the law and humiliating nomas and hezbullah. Taking out Saddamn was the best thing that could happen to Israel. This war would be alot worse with him and iran.

President Bush and Eyecondi are playing this exactly right.

Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
Shalom Israel

#234, Wow, take no prisoners! I have to agree for all of Newt's intellect and past bravery,Great Leadership he still goes overboard. Sometimes I think he is a little insecure, and needs to be adored, and sometimes I think it is just his ego talking, and his need to be on that Presidential wannabe Stage. It could be a combination of both, and he knows if he does not throw in a couple of zingers they will never ask him back.

biden, who reminds me of the aging leader of a Metro sexual biker gang,

May I use it as a tag line?

By all means please do.

Juan also suggested that Israel should be negotiating with Hezbollah and Hamas rather than attempting to destroy them. (Even Mara called him on his nonsense). And his comment that Israel's actions have been ego-related ("this is all about them trying to act 'manly'") could very well be the most brain-dead statement he's ever made. ....no small accomplishment.

Could it be that the presence of Brit and the likelyhood of a smackdown for any stupid statements acts as a governor on Juan's mouth?  The man does seem to make his stupidest statements in forums where Brit is not present.

It's kind of like how you automatically guard your language when your parents are around.

#236, I like that we do not know the Candidate right now, too much can happen in 3 months to change the atmosphere, let alone 2 years down the road. I think it is a positive not a negative. I believe we will see things coming together very soon for the Pubbies, they just have to be in agreement on the War on Terrorism which includes Iraq as the focal point.

It's a crazy world we live in, where those who are righteous are regularly those who are demonized.

Thanks again, Anita, for this week's media nuggets. All the BS today from liberal "analysts" (plus the positive inspiration provided by nugget #2) reminded me of the U.S.-Syria shuttle diplomacy and by mad Maddie Half-Bright's predecessor, Warren Chrisopher, who seemed to be "developing a relationship" with Assad the elder (Basher's dad) every weekend. (Do any FReepers remember how many times Christopher went to Syria?) A quick an dirty Google search for "Warren Christopher Syria" (without the quotes) revealed this nugget written by someone at AEI in January 2000:

http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.11210/pub_detail.asp

"And why does the United States dance with Syria? Perhaps it is because the Clinton administration has no concept of honor. Lacking that, this administration cannot understand the damage caused to its credibility by allowing a flailing Stalinist regime in Syria to humiliate it freely and repeatedly. Nor, it seems, does the Clinton administration understand that tolerating Syria’s behavior makes real peace less, not more, likely."

Good point. ....could very well be the case. Kristol and Barnes voiced exceedingly polite responses to Juan's insane ramblings this morning, and it appeared to just encourage him.

When this all settles out in a month or so with no where near any of the doom and glooms hysteric predictions being any where near accurate, these Conservatives are going to take a massive PR hit....This is NOT WW3. This is vermin control or international gang warfare.

I disagree. No question there are stark differences between this and WW I and II, or the Cold War. Granted, the enemy does not have world domination over their immediate horizon. The dynamics are different, the peril masked by the artificial separation of states from terror nets. The term vermin control fatally undersells the effort it is going to take to avert what will otherwise metastasize over decades, with demographics, into a militant Islam that is too capable, too entrenched to do anything about it other than unthinkable destruction.

The resolve within the US and the West has to form itself around a recognition of the enemy. Also, hawkish rhetoric has a point right now in that there is a window of opportunity.

I am sorry Pukin but that is simply Chicken Little hysteria. It is going to make those producing it look absurd in about 30 days. Counter Insurgency (AKA Counter Terrorism) is not Total War. Trying to inflate the one into the second would be a gross error politically and militarily on our part.

I understand the desire to simply end this war that started in 1979 with Iran by kicking the crap out of them now. Problem is you do not have either the political consensus nor military power in place to do it.

We are in the position the allies were in the spring of 1943. We had just finished annihilating one front of the Axis in North Africa. The "World War 3" crowd are basically advocating that we commence the invasion of Europe this summer. (Take out Iran)

What Bush and Co are doing is the wiser course. They are taking out the weaker power (Syria) right now. Thus like he Invasion of Italy in 1943 this current campaign is eliminating the weaker power leaving Iran (like it did Nazi Germany) militarily and politically isolated.

I understand your professional warrior's instinct to go for the jugular but it simply is not militarily nor politically in the cards. In War, like much else in life, what is desirable is not always what is feasible. In war, like love, timing is everything.
