But what is the radius of the effect and how far back would Israel have to pull back

I have no idea- Charlie has had that page up for years with nothing further. I suspect it's pretty much a point device- just effective near the target.

I can grasp the theory easily- in practice? How powerful a magnetic field can be generated, and how fast can you collapse it? That's what generates the pulse.

The device is charged by discharging a capacitor bank into it, and since it gets destroyed, it could be right to the point of failure. The implosion charge would crush it in milliseconds.

Lebanon. We have at least 25,000 people there. Not all will want to leave but some do. Syria will not let Americans in, so State is either negotiating with them or formulating a plan to get them across the fire zone to a port so the marines can chopper them to Cyprus and they can fly out on their own.

I think the fact that State and DOD are trying to get our citizens out of there, pretty much answers the question.

Iran's either gotten lucky here, or else made an astute assessment and acted on it.

As late as yesterday, I agreed completely with your position.

The use of C802's to attack Israel's radar picket forced me to reconsider that assessment.

At this point in time, utilizing any OOB or TOE for Syria, other than that used for Iran, ignores demonstrated reality.

Yes, it is unlikely that Iran and Syria now perfectly match in military capability, but that is not the question. For any given operation, you have to plan for the worst possible condition set. If Iran transferred "Silkworm" era missiles (Note to all, this is the last time I will enquote or qualify use of the term Silkworm, henceforth it will be used to indicate that Iran, and now Syria too, use Silkworn era cruise missiles, because they do) to Syria, you cannot rule out the shipment of any weapon system.

Iran and Syria constitute a full military and political alliance, in practice as demonstrated Friday, and in treaty, as signed within the last couple months.

I strongly suspect that Israel and western powers are coming to terms with the new calculus, even as I type this, in a process likely to be ongoing for weeks, if not months. This will force all assumptions to be re-assessed, resulting in a longer decision making process on nearly every political and military question.

That's as good a vest-pocket definition as I've heard.

Softwar has some strange, interesting stuff on it, including some of the horrors of technology transfers to our enemies during The Golden Age of Clinton ( hattip: Wes Pruden, Wash Times )-- it's worth poking around.

I urge you to take a hard look at the 1967 and 1973 conflicts and re-assess this position. In my opinion, it needs a minor recalibration.

Let's not be hasty with the nukes. There are a LOT of Americans located right between Syria and Iran.

Yes, when all is said and done, a scalpal may serve better than a sledgehammer in this case. We have too many friends in Israel and residing in nearby countries to irradiate the whole area just yet.

Then again, I was posting the other day that Israel would be completely justified in exterminating the enemy, then later backed down on my harsher thoughts. Let us hope and pray cooler heads prevail, and also that I never become part of that decision process, particularly after morning coffee.

Very astute, but those missiles came frim Iran. Syria is a client-state of Iran and Hezbollah is her proxy, I guess the Iranians are somewhat nibys - "Not in my backyard," I say take it to his back yar - better yetm his front yard.

Those were Iranian missile.

What's up with all this delay. Why isn't there a ground invasion of Lebanon? IDF had a week to mobilize

Israel used that time well, and are in Gaza now.

Hezbollah is a second front. Be patient. Anyone worried that Israel will accept a long term situation that costs them as much as mobilizing reserves and closing posts doesn't know Israel very well.

Israel will dot the i's and cross the t's and then very quickly achieve their military objectives. If you blink, you might miss it.

I will never forgive Reagan for not avenging our Marines at the time. A lot of these ME problems would not be happening if he had of taken care of business back in 83'.
