VATICAN CITY, July 14 (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."
Another fish hat convention?
I think God feels Israel did the right thing.
After all, He gave the land to the Jews in the first place.
Israel is wiping out terrorists who are using another country to base terror operations.
You would think moral clarity like that could even be seen by the pinheads in Rome.
Keeping up the WWII tradition.
You might think that, except the modern Vatican rates peace over security.
Oops! I think it's best if the good guys stick together on this present war. It is emboldening to the bad guys to do otherwise.
Uh oh, be prepared to be flamed by the devoted...

Did the Vatican also condemn Hezbollah for attack Israel? Iran for supporting Hezbollah? Syria for their terroist support?
Thought the pope apologized to the Jewish people for the atrocities committed in WWII by the ruling pope of the Catholic church. Now this pope like his WWII predecessor condemns Israel for defending herself and her people. What does the pope say about the kidnapped Israeli soldiers by the palis & Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah? Sounds like this pope has screw loose.
Turning the other cheek just doesn't work, when dealing with crazy Muslims. It sure didn't work when dealing with Hitler or Stalin either.
"an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.
A "sovereign and free nation" that's infested to the core with Islamic terrorists, that is.
Anyone have a link to a thread of the Vatican condemning Iran and Syria for financing Hezbollah's terrorist ops against Israel?
I don't think calling for peace on behalf of one's flock was the reason the 'reformers' took offense at the Latin papacy.
I guess it escaped you that 40% of the population of Lebanon is Christian, and about 5/8 of those are in communion with the Pope of Rome. I'm quite certain that with less fanfare in the Western press my Patriarch, who has spiritual oversight of about 5% of the population of Lebanon has made similar statements.
Don't forget that Lebanon is the only Arab (or majority Muslim) country where there are explicit legal protections for conversion *from* Islam to other religions.
Couldn't agree more! Very well stated!
>Sounds like this pope has screw loose.<
40% of the Lebanese population is Catholic. There are many Lebanese groups who are thankful to Israel for trying to get rid of Hizbullah.
If I'm not mistaken, the Pope is concerned for the innocent Christian population of Lebanon, not for the Islamic fanatics.
That's not a condemnation. Not yet, anyway.
The pope and Pat Buchanan.
