From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

"Get to the embassy, go out on the next supply chopper?"

No, to do 2 specific things: (1) register your presence in country, with contact info should events lead to an evac; (2) take a look at the refuge point and see if it's to your liking (it probably won't be).

The embassy staff has no better or worse information than any other American in Beirut, except with regard to potential evacs. Period.

Let me get this straight.

Syria was going to resupply Hezbollah using the Beirut International Airport?

Wouldn't it be simpler, cheaper and less conspicuous to drive a truck convoy, like the ones I've seen regularly here? Naaaaahhhh . . . .

Truck convoys can be easily seen and blasted from the air. Best wishes for you, rebel.

I doubt rebel_yell2 is in the position to know what advantage Israel gained by bombing the airport.

If I "insulted" anyone

Dude! You're in a war zone. All rules regarding manners and gentility are inapplicable. We understand.

However, when Britt is interviewing you on Fox, we expect a shout out!

Good luck, keep your head down.

"The purpose of getting a shortwave radio is to get evacuation instructions, not to listen to the news."

OK, OK. You're right.

I guess I'm still thinking back to that Brit yo yo with his ear glued to BBC, telling us what was happening 300 yards away from our hotel, but via a reporter in the UK. It was truly pathetic.

"What stress? According to #159 he is safer than in Chicago."

Safe from thugs. Not ordnance.

I think you have it under control. You ought to stay in contact with the State Department and stay low until they point you to the way out. Watch the behavior of the locals for that will tell you far more than what they say.

Wow. But I'm not surprised.

That's the problem with trying to leave, you're stuck in an unsafe spot with a lot of nervous people.

Best to hunker down.

FoxNews reporting that missiles that hit Haifa earlier were fired by Iranian Guard Units in Lebanon... trying to escalate the problem.

You are safe at where you are, if that´s still a good hotel in Beirut. Israel will not bomb hotels, but of course, you are trapped. I have family near Beirut (Christians, aunt and uncle), they say that at the moment everything is fine, Israel is working against Hizbollah and not against the entire country; they don´t feel unsafe at the moment. Beirut Airport could be open within two days. If the US embassy can find a faster way, you´re lucky. Whatever happens, stay safe and God bless you on your journey back home to the States!
