Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television then went dramatic to win the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 87.
Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.

I'll defer to your opinion. The Sayonara movie clicked with me because we lived in Japan during those years.

However the Japanese born Miyoshi Umeki had a prominent role in Saynora.

I loved that guy. I don't know if anyone else mentioned his performance in "The Longest Day", but it was FanTastic and funny for a war movie.

Yeah, "Hatari" was my fave, too. His "Pockets" character was fun. Having John Wayne in the flick just made it better, too.

And then there was Hatari! And then the bit part as an MP in One, Two, Three. One of Cagney's best, imo.
RIP, Red...

Miyoshi Umeki played Red Buttons' doomed wife. Her performance was heartrending. Sayanora was always one of my favourite movies, except for Ricardo Montalban.
RIP, Red.

Cageny's last actually. He retired afterwards only returning once more 20 years later in a bit part in Ragtime.

RIP, Mr. Buttons. He was a funny man and apparently a very kind one. He was also a patriot.

He was one of the first comedians I watched on TV back when our family got its first TV set in about 1952.

I am most definitely not a movie person, but the husband and I watched "On the Waterfront" recently when it was on TCM. I have always heard all sorts of praise heaped upon Brando's performance in the picture, but now that I have seen it I can't see why. I thought he stunk.

Very few vaudvillians and Catskill Resort trained comedians left.
Jan Murry, another one died a few weeks ago.
