Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television then went dramatic to win the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 87.
Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.

I noticed he played a recurring role on ER last season. He looked 86 and very frail. You know that pasty look with the hollow eyes. God rest his soul. He lived a very full life. My dad loved his comedy. I appreciated his ability to play drama. What a talent.

I never knew he was a comedian.
My first encounter with him was the movie "Longest Day" where he played the role of John Steele, who hung by his parachute from the Catholic Church at St. Mere Eglise.
I vaguely knew that he had to have a pretty good career. Such roles are not "low hanging fruit" (pun intended).

Red Buttons was great in the Poseidan Adventure. What a terrific human being. He will be missed. May God Bless his soul.

Sayonara was probably Marlon Brando's best film. Red played a great supporting role as an Air Force EM. Interestingly, Ricardo Montalban played the role of a Japanese man in the movie...

Interestingly, Ricardo Montalban played the role of a Japanese man in the movie...I believe that it was a time when Japanese nationals were not very welcome on the screen. There are several movies where "asians" are played by "caucasians".
