Shaughnessey of the Boston Globe: Orlando 'Ultimate Yahoo Town'

What is it with Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessey and Florida cities? Trouble trouble booking a tee time? Lines too long at his favorite Disney World ride? Bad OJ in his screwdriver, perhaps?

For the second time this year, Shaughnessey took the occasion of a TV appearance to take a completely gratuituous swipe at a Florida city. As I wrote about here, back in January, appearing on ESPN's 'Rome is Burning', he called Jacksonville a 'yahoo town,' comparing it unfavorably with Detroit, which he dubbed a 'real city' because "you can get the New York Times here."

Appearing again today on 'Rome is Burning', this time Shaughnessey took aim at Orlando. The topic was whether basketball great LeBron James would remain in Cleveland, and Shaughnessey reviewed the history of other superstars remaining in smaller markets. That's when, out of the blue, he called Orlando "the ultimate yahoo town." So out-of-left-field was the comment that it left host Rome muttering.

Is this Shaughnessey's one-man vendetta against the Sunshine State, or is it reflective of an MSM culture that sneers at the sunbelt?

Shaughnessy is on the radio ,with Mike Barnicle, most mornings. There isn't a person on the air with a more irritating voice,oh, and he's a big Lib. Can't stand the guy. Ugly to boot.

My money is on the latter. Probably still peeved about Florida 2000.

Perhaps its part of the MSM/Democrat bitterness over Gore losing FL even after multiple recounts.

Detroit, which he dubbed a 'real city' because "you can get the New York Times here

Hmmmmm? Awfully low threshold.

I have only been to Florida one time but I thought Jacksonville was the best town out of all the ones that i vistied.. that includes, Fort Myers, Orlando, Miami, Vero Beach(I believe that was the name of the town) and Daytona... To me Jacksonville was the best... that was back like in 1994 or so... not sure what its like now.

I have been to Florida numerous times. As states go, it pretty much sucks.

I wouldn't want to live there... but it wasn't bad to visit. with the exception of the weird stuff in Orlando and all the non-Enlgish speaking people in Miami :) From that trip I thought that South Carolina was pretty nice specifically Hilton Head. :)

You're probably right.

I remember election night 2000 listening on the radio to Dan's mentor, Bob Ryan on ESPN Radio. He was utterly disgusted that someone as unqualified and stupid as George W. Bush had won and felt America had let him down personally. Oh yeah, and he thought his venom was purely objective and non-partisan.

Dan is a Bob Ryan wanna-be. That wouldn't be so bad, except that Bob Ryan is a f**** idiot.

Having seen his picture, I will give the guy a pass. He has enough to deal with.

Without a doubt, one of the worst radio shows in the history of the medium.

No preparation; arrogant, condescending hosts; liberal soap box chidings; childish analysis of world events.

He must have taken a wrong turn and ended up in Yeehaw Junction, just a road-apple's throw from Holopaw.
