A Whitefish man was sentenced Thursday to spend 50 hours wearing a sandwich board with the words, I am a liar. I am not a Marine. I have never served my country. Chief U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in Missoula also sentenced William Horvath to four months of house arrest for making a false statement.
Horvath, 36, was convicted of making a false statement a felony. According to court documents, in 2001 he told a probation officer that he served time in the U.S. Marine Corps. The probation officer was gathering information on Horvath on a prior charge of being a fugitive in possession of firearms or ammunition.
A veteran himself, Molloy ordered Horvath to perform 50 hours of community service by marching in front of the U.S. courthouse in Missoula during regular business hours. He must wear a sandwich board with large letters that will read, I am a liar. I am not a Marine,

I'm tired of lenient judges. I'd like to put him in stocks in front of the VA, and every military person coming and going can give him a swift kick in the pants on the way by.
FYI ping!
Can't wait for the pictures.
I better scrape that "Worlds Greatest Lover" bumper sticker off my truck before I get into trouble.
Only fifty hours!
There's the real crime he should be made to wear that sign for the next four years everytime he steps out on the street.
Well, at least Sheehan now knows his schedule so she can do some hug shots with him.
Judge would prolly make you wear panties on your head for that infraction.
I'd think this violates the letter of the constitution as "unusual punishment".
If this ever happens to Kerry, we need to get it on Pay Per View.
All monies go to veteran organizations.

I wonder if that appplies to false statements made on message boards? DU would lose half their members the first day.
Surely the story is wrong and its only a felony to lie if its to a federal official.
This is not lenient in my book.
It's a good, creative sentence. Leniency would be shrugging off the guy's misrepresentation, giving him "time served" or merely probation.
Public humiliation is an excellent punishment and, even better, a real deterrent to others who might be contemplating the same course of action.
He also did get 4 months of house arrest for telling a lie. This judge is no Vermont idiot.
The ACLU are probably on the job already.

Don't forget about Retired Col. MurthaFu@ker, think of the possibilities.
I hope you're being sarcastic.
I think you'd be amazed at the sentences some small town judges/justices of the peace hand out. Justice is alive and well, particularly in the rural West.
As the progeny of a small-town Judge and a lawyer, myself, I was continually amazed at some of the sentences my Dad imposed. Good stuff!!
What makes you think the Marines would want this loser?
