VANITY - Anybody getting an odd popup box when viewing "pings"?
Posted on 07/06/2006 6:09:11 AM PDT by The G Man
When I click on "pings" I get a popup box asking me to sign in to a website for hippercritical.typepad.com. Does this happen to anyone else? This is the only website or FR page where it happens. Never heard of that site, but it appears to be a political blog of some sort
Below is a screencap. Any ideas?

No, but then, I'm on a Mac, it actually works like it's supposed to and blocks popups. :D

Looks to me like someone hot-linked to a pic on that blog. I have seen something similar before, when pics from specific sites are linked to. I hope this helps.

I've got several popup blockers, and they all work. I never get any. This thing comes up only when I go to look at my pings.

Weird... Have you checked for malware, bots etc? Does Jim or John know about this? HTML poltergeist? Brrrrrrr...
To: The G Man; JRios1968
I think JRios got it correct. Look through your ping list on that first page to see if anyone posted an image to you.
Then go to that thread and open it. See if you get the same popup window.

I have no idea where that's coming from but how do you get a screen capture like that?

Shadow:
You hit "Ctrl" + "Print Screen" to take a snapshot of your screen. I then paste it into Microsoft paint and resize/crop it. I then upload it to tinypic.com and link it here.

On a Windows PC, you can capture the entire screen by pressing [PrintScreen]. If you want to capture just the active window, press [Alt]-[PrintScreen]. The image will be copied to the clipboard.
From there, you can use Edit/Paste in any graphics program to move the image from the clipboard to the program.
I hope that helps.

I have not seen what you describe, but very occasionally on my home computer, I come to the site and there is some "gremlin" of one sort or another, such as being directed to a list of anti-FR sites. (I use AOL as my ISP at home - yes I know there are other better systems.) I don't mean to be suspicious, but I've only ever noticed this with FR and it is not impossible in my opinion that someone is monkeying around.
Feel free to flame, all, if this sounds kooky, but it did happen.

You could have picked it up at another site, making a cookie or temporary Internet file which is now stored in your computer. You need to clean them out using Disk Cleanup ( Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools ) or Internet Options ( Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/General Tab ( the 1st one )).

Try clearing your cookie history and running your spyware programs.
