As we celebrate the 230th birthday of the United States of America, our president joined the ideological, and perhaps biological, descendants of those who fought to give us our freedom by creating this new nation. The president went to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, to speak to and eat with the troops and their families (who gave him a birthday cake).
He will return to the White House for a July 4th celebration with family and friends. That will also serve as a birthday party for the President.
Give your kids a few years. then they will be bragging about how tough you were on them. They don't say it this way but here is how it comes out in conversations with their friends, "You thing your mom cared about you? Well, my mom would not let me do BLA BLA BLA. I coudn't even Bla Bla Bla."
"My mom would let me do anything I wanted too." is worth zero points in the game called whose Mom cared for them the most.
Doing better than usual. I am also enjoying more quiet around here, with all the neighbor kids out on picnics, apparently. It's nice to have the windows and door open wihtout all the screeching of kids being kids. We have nice weather today, too, so the fireworks this evening will go well for the admiring fans.
Olive oil + butter are great for sauteing because olive oil burns at a higher heat and butter burns at a lower heat, so if you put the OO in first, saute', and then add the butter towards the end, you get all the flavor w/o burning the butter. Works great for vegetables too.
One of my favorite vegetable saute's is asparagus tips, sliced mushrooms, and onion slices (put the onions in first so they get tender), with garlic salt.
Thanks as always, esp. for the info about the Celebration at Ford's Theater.
:-)
How are you and your family? Having a good summer, I hope.
Very cool. Sorry you couldn't be there.
Thanks for the July 4th Dose, Gretchen. Wonderful photos!!
I never thought of it that way, but I do brag about how strict my parents were! LOL!
Thanks for the encouragement. Even when I know I'm doing the right thing, it's nice to get that reinforcement from others.
:-)
My pleasure.
Hi there! How's your family? Still homeschooling? Our daughter graduates this year and is off to college in the Fall. Our son had been in high school for his first two years, but we're moving back home to MS, and we decided to homeschool him his last two years. He's thrilled about it because he can be portable and won't have to deal with a school schedule anymore!
You really should get a Distinguished Service Award for all the links and other info you dig up for us. Thanks especially for the heads up about the ABC special tonight.
I'm glad you're having a nice QUIET day. That's what I love about the country--no screaming kids except my own. :-) Your talk about cooking is making me hungry!
Yeah, us too. So it goes. I know what this meant to the troops and their families: A very, very great lot. My daughter is still amped from the President this morning. I've stood right next to that statue.. With the help of your photos, Gretchen? It's the next best thing to being there. Thank you. :)
Having had strict parents who were watchful and careful for your welfare comes in very handy when you're a parent, because you can quote what your parents did, and it reinforces to your children:
1. You're not the only one who has these rules;
2. Your children come from a family line with a tradition of lovingly setting boundaries.
You're welcome to mine
:)
but thank ya for gif starter cred/ping to it...LOL!
Looks great together!
It was nice that he singled out the families of the military for special thanks. They also carry a heavy burden at times.
Thank you for the Dose, Gretchen! I have looked forward to this one! I love the President's remarks about the parachutes! Very funny. I heard just a little of his speech--it was wonderful. I was glad to read more of what he said. Thank you!
***In those photos you posted of the Korean War Memorial and the WW2 War Memorial, it seems to me that the
Korea one memorializes the war in "War Memorial" and the WW2 one memorializes the memorial in "War Memorial." (Sanitizes it.)***
You said it well! My adult son and I just agreed that the Korean Monument makes us so much more aware that there were PEOPLE involved.
Freepmail to you.
What fabulous photos with our soldiers! The third photo in this post is so classic GWB--giving a hug to the cafeteria lady! :)
