Britons see US as vulgar empire builder
Telegraph UK ^ | Ben Fenton

Posted on 07/03/2006 9:56:09 AM PDT by Mazi83

Britons have never had such a low opinion of the leadership of the United States, a YouGov poll shows.

As Americans prepare to celebrate the 230th anniversary of their independence tomorrow, the poll found that only 12 per cent of Britons trust them to act wisely on the global stage. This is half the number who had faith in the Vietnam-scarred White House of 1975.

Most Britons see America as a cruel, vulgar, arrogant society, riven by class and racism, crime-ridden, obsessed with money and led by an incompetent hypocrite.

American troops are failing either to win "hearts and minds" in Iraq or bring democracy to that country.

More than two-thirds who offered an opinion said America is essentially an imperial power seeking world domination. And 81 per cent of those who took a view said President George W Bush hypocritically championed democracy as a cover for the pursuit of American self-interests.

A spokesman for the American embassy said that the poll's findings were contradicted by its own surveys.

"We question the judgment of anyone who asserts the world would be a better place with Saddam still terrorizing his own nation and threatening people well beyond Iraq's borders.

"With respect to the poll's assertions about American society, we bear some of the blame for not successfully communicating America's extraordinary dynamism.

"But frankly, so do you [the British press]."

Sounds like a nasty place, hope I never have to go there.

Fortunately I live in a land where race is at worst a minor politicial scam, where public generosity is unparalleled, where the average Joe will go out of his way to do you a favor, where your class is only as good as what you give, and no worse than what you earn. Where I live, most people would gladly trade some of their money for more time at home, if high welfare taxes didn't get in the way. And we have a president who doesn't always get it right but he says what he means and he does what he says.

Feel sorry for the inhabitants of that other place.

Does anyone give rat's ass about what Britons think?

I surely don't.

In another 20 years it will be just another Islamic state.

And talking about vulgar, there is nothing as vulgar as Briton's soccer fans.

But we at least won't be joining the Arab League in 20 years.

Good to know the liberal press is doing such a good job.
I love how it works. First they emphasize and emphasize that the US is a big mean nasty picking on the little humble dictators of the world. That we are raging hegomonists hell bent on protecting global corporate pirates who use war to manipulate markets and drive up their profits. That we send troops to savage freedom loving peoples and to supress true democracy.

Then after they have reported this. They ask " What is your opinion of the US". And then it makes news that the opinions reflect what the people have read in the news, heard on the radio and seen on TV day after day after day.

Ya gotta love a system that justifies its own existence so well. What I would love to see is a big headline
People say FU to mainstream media. Pravda Zombies sent running for shelter.

OK, we have enough poles about what the rest of the world thinks of Americans. Now lets have a poll about what Americans think of the rest of the world.

Not only their press but ours as well.

And don't forget Hollywood. They are almost as bad as the BBC.

I watched both French and British TV and can't believe the negative slant they give very broadcast.

They replaced Pravda when the USSR collapsed.

The Telegraph is a right leaning newspaper. It is the paper of the conservative Tories. However, they might have turned on the U.S. because of the relationship between Bush and Blair.

Gee, I wonder where they are getting these thoughts about America ? Could this be the answer ?

That is the answer to the Why do they hate us? question. They read our newspapers, watch our movies and television and believe them.

I spent 3 years in the UK (61-64) and while the Brits my age (19) weren't to crazy about us because most of us had cars while they mostly rode bikes and the girls naturally wanted to be with us. There was the idea that they could maybe marry a GI and return to the country where "the streets were paved with gold"

But the older folks, the parents of these youngsters really treated us well because they remembered how well we fought with their brave soldiers to put an end to the hell they were forced to go through at the hands of Hitler.

Ya gotta love a system that justifies its own existence so well.

You forgot the so called "fourth estate" the self annointed voice of the people or representatives of the people yet never were elected or held responsible to the people. Unlike politicans. Of course this may explain why readership for the dinosaur mdeia is down 15% this year.
