MFUME LEADS CARDIN IN SHARPLY DIVIDED PRIMARY, POLL SHOWS (MD Senate race)
The Washington Post ^ | Juny 2, 2006 | Matthew Mosk and Claudia Deane

Former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume leads U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin in what is shaping up to be a racially polarized Democratic Senate primary in Maryland, even as roughly a third of the electorate has not settled on a candidate, according to a new Washington Post poll.

For the first time in Maryland history, both major parties have the potential to nominate an African American, and the poll suggests that the hopes of all of the major candidates will depend on their ability to cross racial boundaries for support.

Here's the numbers:

"The Post's survey, conducted June 19 to 25, shows Mfume ahead by six points among registered voters, 31 to 25 percent, with 32 percent saying they don't know whom they're backing. The remaining respondents were split among other candidates.

"I still consider myself running from behind," Mfume said yesterday. "As I've run this campaign for almost a year and a half, we've always been considered the underdog. We didn't have the same amount of money or the blessing of the party. We're still trying to reach the ears of the voters."

Cardin said his own polls, including one taken at the same time as the Post's poll, show him leading Mfume and Steele by double digits. "We expected during the course of the campaign to see polls that would have us up and down," he said yesterday."

... in what is shaping up to be a racially polarized Democratic Senate primary...

Now why would anyone think that?

Its no wonder Mfume is so far ahead in the polls.

He is such a great role model. 5 illigitimate kids, one a top rated drug dealer in Balt. , Fired from the NAACP because he couldnt keep his hands off the female hired help. Just what Md. needs as a senator.

The thing that is hurting Steele is that he is honest, capable, and doesnt bad mouth white people every time he opens his mouth. Steele would have a better chance for the black vote in Prince Georges county if he had served some time for rape or armed robbery and he could carry Montgomery County if he were queer.

I predict this:

If Kweisi Mfume wins the Democratic primary, Michael Steele wins the general election. Could Republican voters change their registration so that they can help Mfume outpoll Ben Cardin?

I contend that nothing is hurting Steele. Once the Dems nominate someone, his numbers will go up measurably. It's simple math. Even with head-to-head polls, people are hoping for their favorite candidate to win. The supporters of one Dem are not necessarily likely to support the other. And certainly their enthusiasm will be dimmed in a non-Presidential election year.

I honestly think Steele will win as he is far and away the best candidate. Now if we ould unload Mikulski, Md. =, and get rid of Mike Miller md. could start growing up.

This poll is quite a bit different from earlier polls of the MD primary, so I would like to see some confirmation before celebrating, and in any event the number of undecideds is very high, which may benefit Cardin. But as I've been saying for months, over 40% of Democrat primary voters in MD are black, and Cardin will have to compete with several other candidates (unfortunately, none of whom have caught on yet) for the white vote, so Mfume could win the primary with 40% despite getting very few white votes. And in the general election, I would rate Michael Steele a slight favorite against Mfume (MD is still a Democrat state, and Mfume would get a heavy black turnout and close to 90% of the black vote), but a slight underdog against Cardin. Ironically, Mfume winning the Senate nomination may result in us capturing the Senate seat but losing the governorship (due to the aforementioned higher black turnout).

If being the best candidate were all it takes, we'd have 500 Republicans in the House & Senate.

I do have to wonder about all those undecideds. I do agree that Mfume is better for us in the general (although, we all similarly though Barack Hussein Obama would scare the crap out of the White voters in IL in the general, and that didn't turn out to be the case -- although Alan Keyes wasn't the sitting IL Lt Governor).

Unlike Obama, Mfume has been scaring white voters for years. And Steele is a formidable candidate in his own right.

This is very good news. queezey no sefume is the guy we want. He will enable Mike Steele to really shine through. When Blacks compare the two, Mike will get the 30% Black vote he needs and queesy will be a tough sell for all but the lowest rank and file rat. White rank and file rats will give him less than warm support, and Mike will slip through in a close race.

Not sure I can agree on that one. I know we have some RINO's, thats to be expected in a free country. Problem with democrats is that they arent free. Not a one of them leaves the fold, and I will never be convinced that some of them wouldnt mind being a little free from the party. No party is right all the time, but you would never get that admission from a Democrat.

An electorate that could send a worthless bastard generator like Kweisi Mfume to the SENATE of the United States of America --- should scare the hell out of folks...

Perhaps I should've said 500 Conservatives, as we all know Republican doesn't necessarily mean Conservative. It'd be nice if we had 'em in both parties, but at this point, I'd like to see the 'Rat party shattered into a million pieces.
