What does "Ping" mean?

I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

There are thousands of people on this forum at any given time. Not dozens, not hundreds, but thousands. Posting a thread here is the equivalent of getting on stage.

You could have nudged a neighbor in any thread with a BTW (that's "by the way") what does "ping" mean (like I did on my first day here). Or you could have privately mailed the query to someone. But you didn't.

You got up on stage, and said into the mike, "Excuse me please, everybody? Can I have your attention please? Thank you.

What does ping mean?"

You just basically asked to be pelted with produce.
