"Olmert: We'll fight on until attacks end, soldiers returned"
By Haaretz Service
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The prime minister also drew a parallel between the current operations in Gaza and Lebanon, saying that Israel was acting in self-defense on both fronts. Three weeks ago, Corporal Gilad Shalit was snatched from his base close to the Gaza border and has been held by Palestinian militants since.
He said that Israel has "no territorial dispute with our southern neighbors or our northern neighbors," but warned that while "Israel did not ask for this confrontation," it would "continue to fight with full force to stop terror" on both fronts.
The prime minister also accused Syria and Iran, both of whom provide practical support for Hezbollah and Hamas, of aggravating the violence.
"Iran and Syria are still interfering in Lebanese and Palestinian Authority affairs through Hezbollah and Hamas," he said.
He said that although Israel "has no intention of interfering in internal Lebanese matters," it was nonetheless "fighting against a terror organization operating in Lebanon.""

Iraqi Forces Capture Insurgent Leader, Kill Another
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 17, 2006 Iraqi forces captured an insurgent cell leader in Baghdad July 13 and killed another insurgent leader in northern Iraq July 14, military officials reported.
The Iraqi forces captured an insurgent cell leader, planner and organizer in a southern Baghdad mosque compound during a security operation July 13.
The Iraqi forces received small-arms fire almost immediately upon arrival at the mosque compound in the Al Rasheed district of Baghdad. Soon after arriving, they captured the insurgent leader, who is known for purchasing weapons and coordinating attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces, officials said.
A coalition force adviser said all gunfire occurred outside of the mosque courtyard and was directed away from the mosque. At no time during this operation did Iraqi or coalition forces enter the mosque itself.
Iraqi forces detained six other "persons of interest" and seized weapons and military material. No visible damage was done to the mosque at the time Iraqi and coalition force advisers departed the scene, the adviser said.
In a separate operation, Iraqi army forces killed an insurgent leader, Abdal-Ghafor, and captured four other suspected insurgents during an early morning raid July 14 in northern Iraq.
Iraqi forces and their coalition force advisers received fire as they approached an objective near Muhallabiyah, southeast of Tal Afar. Iraqi forces reacted immediately, assaulting the objective, killing Ghafor, a senior insurgent leader in the area, and capturing four more suspected insurgents. Ghafor also went by the names Abdal Rahman and Abu Ameen, officials said.
Iraqi soldiers also seized the following weapons from the objective: one sniper rifle; five AK-47 assault rifles; one hand grenade; one rocket-propelled grenade; one improvised explosive device; about 600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition; various amounts of other small-arms ammunition; three blasting caps; and IED-making materials that included wires and batteries.
In other news, coalition forces successfully targeted and captured another al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist and four additional suspects during a raid near Yusufiyah early today.
Credible intelligence led the assault force to the location of the targeted terrorist, who was known to have ties to foreign fighters in the area. The suspect also is reported to be linked closely to senior al Qaeda in Iraq leaders and several previous coalition targets. The troops quickly secured the target location and captured the detainees without incident.

"Understanding the temper of the times"
By Cal Thomas
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In chronicling the number of armed warriors who joined David at Hebron, there is this exquisite line: "All these men understood the temper of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take." (1 Chronicles 12:32, New Living Translation)
For roughly 4,000 years there has been "unrest" and war in the Middle East. It possibly began when the ancient Israelites drove out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. Modern Israel is attempting to drive out Hezbollah-ites, Hamas-ites, Islamic Jihad-ites and the rest.
Nothing has changed, except Israel may be in greater peril today than at any time in its modern history. "

"Inmate gets eight-year sentence over prison siege"
11/07/2006 - 15:28:38
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "One of six inmates who held five Mountjoy Prison officers hostage during a siege in the Dublin jail almost 10 years ago was today sentenced to eight years imprisonment.
Joseph Cooper, 33, with an address in Manchester, England, was part of the gang of prisoners who threatened the warders with strangulation and blood-filled syringes over a 53-hour period in January 1997.
One of the other men involved in the siege, which erupted after a planned rooftop protest failed, was Paul Ward, the man convicted but later cleared of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.
Cooper was serving five years for assault at the time of the incident, but was granted bail by the High Court and fled to England in 1999 before he was due to stand trial for his part in the siege."

"Hizballah Wants Israel to Free Child-Killer"
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
July 18, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - An Arab prisoner Hizballah wants Israel to release in exchange for the two Israeli soldiers it abducted in a cross-border raid last week is serving multiple life sentences for an attack in which he killed a four-year-old girl by smashing her skull with a rifle butt.
Samir Kuntar is one of only two or three Lebanese prisoners still held by Israel, and Hizballah said its July 12 assault is aimed at winning his freedom.
The terrorists killed eight Israeli soldiers and seized Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, taking them back over the border. Their whereabouts and condition remain unknown.
The Shi'ite group dubbed the raid Operation True Promise (Al-Wa'ad Al-Sadeq), saying it was making good on an earlier pledge to continue to capture Israeli soldiers and use them to obtain the release of the remaining Lebanese in Israeli jails.
Since the raid, the conflict has escalated, with Israel launching an air assault on Lebanese infrastructure and Hizballah targets and Hizballah firing hundreds of missiles into Israel.
The fighting and loss of life have swung some attention away from the hostage issue, and Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in an address late last week that "the battle today is no longer a battle over prisoners or the exchange of prisoners."
Nonetheless, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said during a televised address to the nation Monday night that he kept photographs of Goldwasser and Regev - along with one of another soldier, Gilad Shalit, kidnapped by Hamas in a June raid across the Gaza-Israel frontier - on his desk as a daily reminder of his mission.
"We will do everything in our power to ensure their safe release and bring them back home," he said."

Peres: Hizbullah Fired 1,500 Missiles Into Israel Since Wednesday (All came from Iran and Syria)
Naharnet ^ | 18 Jul 06
Posted on 07/18/2006 4:14:15 AM PDT by IrishMike
Hizbullah has fired 1,500 missiles and rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon since the beginning last week of its military conflict with Israel, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said on British television Tuesday. "We should stop the shooting of missiles over our heads, over our villages and towns. They fired until now fifteen hundred missiles and rockets," Peres told Sky News.
"We are trying to control the roads (...) of Lebanon because all the 12,000 missiles and rockets that they have collected came from Iran and Syria," Peres said.
The veteran politician also said that Israel did not intend to send ground troops into Lebanon, as it has done several times in the last three decades.
"We're not going to penetrate Lebanon on the ground," Peres said.
He insisted that the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hizbullah is an enemy of the Lebanese people acting independently from their national interests, and that Israel, by contrast, wanted good relations with the Lebanese.
"The only enemy they have is an army within an army called Hizbullah. Lebanon is not our enemy. We have nothing to ask from Lebanon, we have much to hope from Lebanon. We hope to live as good neighbors," he said.
"We didn't attack Lebanon, and we are not going to organize Lebanon, we are not going to play a role in their politics," he said.
Quoting Israeli intelligence sources, the London specialist magazine Jane's Defense Weekly said Hizbullah probably had a total of 10,000 to 15,000 rockets provided by Syria and Iran.
