Tensions Running High Between Hillary And Dem Senate Leader Reid

The exceedingly intense rivalry between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Charles Schumer (N.Y.) embroiled just about everybody in the Senate Democratic leadership Tuesday, including Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) and his spokeswoman, ROLL CALL reports.

Apparently, Clinton and her staff felt snubbed when party leaders organized a news conference in which they vowed to block efforts to give Members of Congress a pay raise until Congress approves an increase in the minimum wage. Clinton has introduced legislation along those lines, but she was not involved in planning the leadership’s news conference to trumpet the issue.

ROLL CALL's Mary Ann Akers: Although Clinton, a close adviser of Reid’s, was ultimately invited to attend the news conference, she was not told about the event until just hours before it began Tuesday.

While the noon event was hastily arranged — planning for it only began Monday night — a Clinton aide was apparently so furious that the Senator seemed to be left out of the loop that she bawled out (“reamed out” was how one source put it) a spokeswoman for Reid near the entrance to the Senate Radio-Television Gallery.

The Clinton aide, Laurie Rubiner, was overheard saying to Reid spokeswoman Rebecca Kirszner, “You suck” and “How could you do this?”

... they vowed to block efforts to give Members of Congress a pay raise until Congress approves an increase in the minimum wage.

Don't get me wrong, I think Senators should only receive a stipend and there should be no minimum wage, but here's my prediction: Senate salaries will end up being raised and the minimum wage won't budge. Any takers?

Was it this Laurie Rubiner?

Laurie Rubiner is Director of New America’s Universal Health Insurance Program, which aims to achieve universal coverage in America through a system of mandatory insurance combined with public subsidies for those who need them. (She used to work for Lincoln Chafee and Bob Dole!)

Getting upset about being snubbed over a press conference? Oh brother. I've been in politics professionally, and I've seen a lot of strange behavior in that realm. But this story takes such manic behavior to a higher level of obtuseness.

Now we're raising the minimum wage again? Has anyone been able to prove a connection between raising the minimum wage and reducing poverty? Nope. It affects virtually no one. All it really does is price young people out of jobs they normally would have been able to obtain.

I am willing to bet that Congress will get their pay raise. I think that is guaranteed. The minimum wage part of this is probably a 50-50 bet.

I love it though holding up a pay raise they dont need in order to get a minumum wage bill that isnt any good.

Radio-TV gallery? And no one managed to get either an audio or video of the exchange?

[If anyone did mange to get a recording, that person could experience first hand Arkancide.]
