THE Republican majority in the US Senate has failed by just one vote to amend the constitution to ban desecration of the national flag.
The motion was backed by 66 votes, one short of the two thirds majority need to get a constitutional amendment passed.
Thirty-four senators voted against.
The measure, backed by President George W. Bush, had been promoted by the Republican majority as it tries to rally its conservative base ahead of key congressional elections in November.
If not, this amendment would have had aboslutely no effect on you.
If you're a flag burner, you're on the wrong website.
The displaying of unlit ragged flags nailed to the side of buildings as a "patriotic" gesture.
The cheap Chinese made plastic flags used as lawn decorations and blown about with the other trash.
The flag in full color on someone's shirt dirtied with softdrink and pizza crumbs.
Faded stickers and decals on windows, vehicles, and ? just recognizable as being the U.S. flag.
And all those people who claim such neglected images are patriotic displays.
The flag burners are openly making a political statement but what statement is made by trivializing the national symbol?
The next time you see someone burning the American Flag: kick his butt! That way we won't need an amendment. Just tell the cops when they come to arrest you that you were exercising your first amendment right to free speech as you kick butt when you are angry as words escape you. We are too wimped out and scared of the gov't here in America. Why if we were not afraid to keep and bear arms there would have been no 9/11 as there would have been at least several armed citizens on board to shoot the foolish arabs with box cutters! Makes me mad when I think about it. The Israelis should also kick arab butt. Force march all the arabs in Gaza to Egypt and all the Arabs in the West Bank to Jordan. End of problem for them. Get tough America! GEt tough Israel! Now I feel better. thank you.
Probably because they don't KNOW them!
It seems every two years Congress drags this tired amendment out from under a pile of more important bills just so they can be on record.
To some, the flag was not just a piece of cloth....
At Ringgold Gap, Ga., on November 27, 1863, the 1st Arkansas Infantry captured the colors of the 76th Ohio Infantry in a desperate fight, in which eight color bearers of the Ohio regiment were shot down. On September 20, 1916, this flag was returned by the survivors of the 1st Arkansas Infantry during the thirty eighth annual reunion of the survivors of the 76th Ohio at Newark, Ohio.
To William C. Montgomery, of Johnstown, was given the glory of receiving the flag for the 76th Ohio Regiment.
Mr. Montgomery said: "I was the first of the seven color bearers to carry the flag into battle when the 76th engaged the 1st Arkansas at Ringgold Gap, Ga. I had not proceeded very far with 'Old Glory' when a shell carried away my right arm, and the colors fell. One by one six other men picked up the flag only to be shot down.
"The colors of a regiment are the poetry of the service. The men love their banner; they march under it; they fight under it. If the color bearer falls, another seizes it and holds it aloft, and so on until the battle ends. The firm determination is to keep it flying at whatever cost; and if in the stress of war it is lost, the sorrow is universal and profound.
The First Amendment does not protect violent acts against others.
I said that tongue in cheek. I am quite serious however, that flag burners should have their butts spontaneously kicked and I can assure you the problem of flag burning will go away without another law from useless pols.
If you look carefully you'll probably see cover for those Dem Senators that are running for re-election this year. As well, there were 3 GOP Senators who voted Nay.

Because journalists are, by and large, ignorant sluts.
They represent Americans. And they voted. That's the way it works, whether you like it or not. I disagree with 90% of the crap the Congress passes and W signs. But, that's the way it works.
"Good. Free Speech survives another election cycle."
You have got to be kidding me.
I dont consider burning the Flag as free speech. It is an expression, an expression of rage and hatred against this country.
Running down a neighborhood street naked yelling foul things at all the houses you pass is an expression and is against the law.
Using Road-Rage against someone that cut you off on the freeway is an expression and is against the law.
Burning a cross in front of someones home is an expression and is against the law.
All three of these expressions anger people, disturb the peace, and invite at worse a violent response from those it offends. Do you not think burning Old Glory fits into this sort of expression? I do.
I agree. I'd cut their pay back to what it was in 1787... one dollar a year.
I dont like flag burning either. But I dislike governments that limit our rights even more.
Of course, she was also the first to call for an amendment to get rid of the Electoral College after 2000. It was put in place to counter "bloc" voting which is exactly what the Dems head for.
Always remember that if Gore had won HIS OWN STATE, he would have won the election.
Hundreds of Amendments have been proposed or introduced over the years. Remember, this would still have to go to the states, where 38 of them would have to ratify it.
I think we are a long way from over-amending the Constitution.
Liberal loonies and Al queeda would thank the Dems and other libertarians for voting against the flag burning amendment.
They show no respect for the American flag whatsoever.
Neither did we need a Pledge Of Allegiance to the Flag until a 19th century socialist promoted such.I find it instructive the Founders apparently saw no such need .
